hi all i have just completed a 20vt conversion into a mk2 was a nice project thought it was about time to get myself into a drastic project i wanted something that was 4wd as the mk2 was a lot of fun but just would like more traction so thought 4wd would be a good project, but what car to put it in did not want to do a mk2 as i have got one and im a great fan of the older style cars so i suppose it had to be the mk1 golf. so i had a good look on ebay and managed to find one for about 400 complete ish lol, so now i started thinking what engine shall i put into it always been tempted with some sort of vr so i started looking around to see what vrs i could get then i luckily managed to find a mk5 golf r32 from an 08 plate only done about 20,000 miles which was nice, also come with ecu, engine loom and dsg gearbox A few pics of when i got the car right now for me to start stripping it engine arrived brought a stand off ebay to get the car up in the air and to be able to get it upside down proves quite handy so far ive cut off all the original engine mounts to make way for new ones slinging the engine in to see how it eyes up had to carve a bit off this one to make it fit better i will have to make some spacers up sometime to go between the mounts and the gearbox/engine now the mount under the car thought i would make this a solid one to stop any engine movement as i will not be using the rubber joint betweent he gearbox and the propshaft, as the mk2 shafts dont line up with the mk5 box
just some pics of how low the engine will probably have to sit, might be able to lift it a bit when everything is in having a bit of looking at the prop shaft there is a bit of a lump in the tunnel under the firewall whats gunna have to move and i have had to move the steering rack up a bit and instead of using nuts to hold the steering rack on i changhed it over for bolts because if i needed to remve it form the car at a later date i would have to move the engine out the way lol
Hopefully not another powernut! Doesn't look that way so far...keep up the good work and go easy on the welder where possible! Looking forward to more!
now lets get the car up side down and have a look and see what we can do about the rear axle im using a mk2 syncro rear axle but running the four motion diff in it and im trying to leave the tunnel as original as i can so i will not be chopping it out but i might have to chop the side out if it in the future to make room for the exhaust first i will be chopping the spare wheel well and the beam what goes across just below it we put the rear axle in it seems to be a bit wide for the vehicle so we chopped it down the middle and took i think 32mm out of the middle of it i used the excess material to go inside where the join is could of used the brackets off the mk2 syncro to hold the axle in but only had one lol! so i just thought i would manufactur some i was planning to put the four motion diff in the same place as where the mk2 one was in relation to where the prop shaft bolts on but when eyeing it up the driveshaft seemed to be at a bit of an angle so ive tried to move the diff further back but the mounting brackets on the top of the diff were right where the axle went over so i had to make a mounting bracket up for that also was a bit of a newsonce moving it back as i had the box to go over the diff made so i will have to lengthen it now to put the rear mounting bracket for the diff now need to fill the gap in lol found a bit of rust appearing a a dodgy repair on the other side from the previous owner so thought i would repair that whilst im here
awesome stuff! the work you have done is immense especially for someone your age. And yeah, i know what you mean about hard times and finances lol.
Looks good so far! Becarefull about just moving the steering rack up - it can mess around with the steering geometry. This can cause bump steer issues etc if your wishbones and steering arms aren't parrallel etc There are 2 schools of though on VR engine in a MK1 - one is the way you've done, the other is to put a fron subframe in. The subframe has the steering rack on it, and allows the prop to run above it. It also means your geometry is as VW have it with mk2's/Mk3's. It does require more cutting and fabbing to get the subframe in though.
wow only 19, now im impressed! Do you work for a fabrication company or is this just a side hobby? Be good to come up and see it some time when it progresses abit more, im moderately local.
WOW..... wish i had the money (and balls ) to even consider something like that at 19! good work man, look foward to seein alot more of this!
ooo did not think about that could i get away with lifting the joints where they attach onto the hubs or not? thanks Joe
yer if you want to cum and have a look you can would like to get to no sum more people who are into VW by trade im a sparky lol but does not mean i know a lot about car wiring though lol so this is just a hobby thanks Joe
i think im going to widen the tunnel where the back section gets narrower to make room for the exhaust as i did not like the look of this so i thought i would do this i have ordered the exhaust just waiting for it to arrive thought we'll go back home and get on the laith and do a bit on that so i started making the spacers for the spax shocks as i bought them off someone who tried to do this and gave up lol making up the adapter to go between the gearbox and the mk2 sycro axel as the original rubber one does not line up
good stuff, cgti worcester group started up there own forum which is www.rubbadubz.co.uk monthly meet at the nightingale on evesham rd, I should be at the next one, dont really know anyone but its friendly enough, pop down if you can its surprising how many nice dubs are in the area.
