Hi guys, greetings from an overseas newbie...

My original plan was to obtain an MK1 body and chassis that was ok, and then take it from there (I've got an 2.0 16v engine & gearbox in the shed)

But my plans are starting to crumble, since I came acros this baby...

A 1983 MK1 16v Oettinger, with merely 14k miles on it (!) => comes out of the showroom of a VW garage...On the upside: good condition, rare species, etc...On the downside: pricetag...6.000 [:s]

I'l have to have a chat with the misses about that holiday again... ;)

6000euros, 14k miles, sounds like a good price to me :)

I live in the neighbourhood of Ghent (Belgium), the other side of the pond...

Just had a few e-mails with the current owner of the car. Seems to be a nice bloke, although he's a cop ;)

My primal question was: "why is it that a car this special and old only has 22k kilometers on it?"

It's quite a wild story, here goes:

In the beginning of the 80's there where several violent robberies in Belgium, commited by the Nijvel Gang, see link:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nijvel_gang

In the area I live, there was another group of criminals, called the Waasland Gang, who began copycatting the Nijvel Gang. Trademark of both gangs where violent robberies, using GTI's as getaway cars.
In February 1983, one of the members of the Waasland Gang bought this brandnew MK1 from Oettinger to use as a fast getaway car. Late 1983 however, the gang was rolled up by the police, and this car ended up in some police depot, where it slept 'till 1993...
It was ten sold in a public auction to a friend of the current owner. That chap restored the car (there was a dent + 3 bullit holes ! on the rightside). In 1994 that guy had a divorce and he needed money. That's where the current owner gets in the picture: he bought it from his mate, but frankly never drove it (his hobby is restoring Beetle's and Porsche's)

So, believe it or not, this is the crime record of this bad ass 16v !

    greetz,
    W

That is awesome, interesting history too! :o :p Any more pics?

The price sounds alright to me if it's in good condition and such low mileage.

What modifications to Oettinger make to the cars when new then, aside from fitting the 16v engine and body mods? Different gearbox, suspension, brakes or anything like that?

At the time, Oettinger made these MK1's on request, the engine has quite some changes, but I do not know them al.These I do know:
    - forged pistons (this engine is in fact 1996cm3, so almost a 2liter)
    - adjusted valves & head + Oettinger injection system (which differs fromm stock, because injector heads sit straight above the cylinders, so special manifold)
    - more aluminium parts, so the engine revs to 7000rpm smoothly
    -etc...

This one is tuned up in other domains to:
    upgrade brakes (ventilated)
    front torsion bar
    copper clutchplate
    Koni springs & shocks
'spaghetti' exhaust straightback (without a cat, of course, lol)

    Specs are:

    142 BHP @ 6.100 rpm
    pistondiameter : 81,0 x 86,4 mm
    Compression : 10,2 : 1
    168 Nm @ 5.000rpm
    max speed : 207 km/hr @ 6.950 rpm
    0 to 100 km/hr : 7,7 sec

That's about it. I'm going to have a drule after work tomorrow...

Hehe, i'm from a little town near gent too (De Pinte)... who knows, we might cross each other on the road someday [:D]

Take good care of that thing because that's about as rare as it gets... i've never seen an oettinger with body mods like that...
