My gearbox seems to be making whining noises through the gears - I've checked the oil level and that's fine, was also changed about a year ago too. Its just passed the MOT too so can't be anything thats checked during that.

The cars done 134k, is this the beginning of major gearbox problems ?

Its quite noisy at idle too, but seems to stop when I put the clutch down... If its the Thrust bearing is this bad news ?

Apparently the bearing can be changed without removing the gearbox, it's located under a littel plate near the filler hole for the gearbox - behind the passenger front wheel. I've never done it myself but a VW specialist told me that yesterday when he was sorting my linkages out!

Doesn't sound like the thrust bearing. If it was there would be a noise when you press the clutch down. This is the time when the lever on the outside of the box pushes
against the bearing to operate the clutch. If your not depressing the clutch then there's no real pressure on the bearing.
Sounds more like an input shaft bearing or the like. But this would mean stripping the box, so check all othjer possibilities first.

Its a kind of clattering noise similar to noisy engine tappets, but goes when clutch is depressed... Also its whining through the gears. Could these symptoms be anything else ?

Is it a nightmare job striping gearboxes, if so what sort of cost am I looking at ?
