Just received a new starter motor for my 16v from West Lancs Auto Electrical. Gave them my part number and sent photos of my old Bosch unit before ordering. The one they have sent does not have a shaft and the solenoid wiring is different

Called them up and they say it will fit its just a newer type?

Battery feed to solenoid is the same, just fit a spade connector/or pop to scrap yard and cut a connector off a polo etc for the switching block bottom right of your pic above ^^

Looking at the connections on my old solenoid there is another spade connection with two thin black wires. On the new starter I don't have the second spade. Do these black wires have to connect on the earth terminal of the new starter? [IMG]

dont even have to crimp on a new terminal, if you pop the old black/red wire spade out of the plastic housing it fits straight on :)

If you got a decent set of crimping tools you can get a mk3/4 plug housing then you need a 'standard timer' terminal to crimp on your old wire

I've tried starting the car a few times and during the last week most of the time I just got a click....
I've given the solenoid a few taps no change.
Today I took the starter off and realise why I should have replaced the brass bush in the bell housing. The starter motor output shaft has quite a wobble on it.
So which starter do I buy and from where?
Replace like for like MK2 B&B have them for circa £65 and replace the bush
Replace with a MK3 GTI starter which according to this post is a better design and possibly means I may not need to replace the bush.

I'm tempted by the MK3 GTI one, but recommendations on a supplier please?

    I'm looking at this
    EBay link

My car is a 91 1.8 8v GTI PB engine.

many mk3 starters are same design as mk2, still uprated design though. the bush is cheap so if you end up with mk2 style replace, if not then dont :)

I ended up buying this one off eBay. No bell housing bush required.

    Really impressed.
Rang them up and they asked various questions gave me the eBay item number. The team processing the order sent me a mail to verify I was ordering the correct item which I confirmed circa mid-day.
Replacement starter arrived at 0830 the next morning. Very pleased. Starting-up sounds soo different

You don’t happen to know the part number of this? I keep hitting dead ends when trying to order one without a number.

Will this fit a MK2 16v KR with the standard gearbox? Better than the OEM starter?.

    Cheers, Keith.

You are best calling them. Then ordering via ebay..
I found them really helpful. They checked they were sending the right one, how many mounting holes / electrical connections.
Delivery was as quick as Amazon Prime!

Don't forget to support the engine when you remove the old one like I did....
