Had this little gem a while now.

It's got alot of history. Started out life as a 1.8 valver owned by a Mr Glynn Jones. He soon got bored with the standard power & took a trip down to BR Motorsport and had the 1.9L BRM 170 conversion carried out. But apparently he soon got bored with that as well and went back for the 2.0L BRM 180 conversion using a 9a passat block with Stage 3 head and big valves. He also decided to upgrade from the standard bosch K-Jet system for something a bit more sophisticated and whacked on the Weber Alpha Gold system.

    Spec
    BRM 2.0 16v 9a engine
Stage 3 cylinder head with big valves
    Schrick 260 cams
    ITBs
    Weber Alpha Management
    Uprated solid engine mounts
4 branch heat wrapped manifold with full stainless longlife exhaust
    Mocal Oil Cooler

    RR'd at 205 bhp @ 6,500 rpm, 163lb/ft @ 5,240rpm

Only 50k on engine/shell, although it is burning a wee bit of oil so being stripped down & rebuilt with a few more minor changes. The main downfall is the bodywork which is being treated to a bare metal respray very soon.

    Was magazine featured in Volkswagen Audi Car mag, and in Ian Kuah's VW Power & Style. This is how it looked in 1990;

    It's changed a bit cosmetically over the years. Here's a few more recent shots;

Nice, I was expecting a complete '80s/90s throwback, didn't realise it had been modernised!

Has the old airbox gone now? Curious bit of kit, one-off I'd expect?

Kuah book found, will scan up soon

Also interested in what that looked like.

Given that Ian Kuah wrote the article in Volkswagen Audi Car, this is the same material in effect, with the same photos. But I hope it satisfies your curiousity

Have the wheels and old skoolness like the grille long since disappeared into its past?

This is also pictured but is referred to as BRM 180 rather than off the car itself. What is that disc to the right of the head?

reading this thread says this to me:
work done to find best intake runner lengths resulted in what was shown in the photo / scan. These parts are not present on the engine as it is now, so output should be reduced?

^ this is based on the rest of the spec remaining the same.

bring to 16v dyno day? :)

Different engine, different mfr, but a comparison I'll throw in anyway, albeit single throttle body.

Being a build thread, a bit of respect, so just a link!

Yep, that's the one :) Do you know the car or just recognise it?

I'm afraid it has, along with a few other bits that have been changed through the years (has had 14+ owners iirc). I think the airbox was a one-off

I have the original copy of the RR printout somewhere? Same figures as the photos above. For me it's all about how the car feels to drive, but I'd love to know the actual figures though.

YES!! As soon as it's rebuilt I plan to do exactly that. :) Although I have a fair bit of bodywork & refitting to do before then. It's all good fun

Is it not part of a cam vernier pulley? One of a two piece design the second part would be made from turning/milling down a standard pulley? A bit like your old one? And like one a member made on here – cannot remember who it was. ,

I know, it's a real shame it has lost some of it's original 80's quirks but that's what happens over the years I guess :(

Thanks very much for the scans, I'll have to get a copy of that book to go with my collection of info!

I only recognise it from when I was trawling for a new MK2, it was one of my top 5, but I wasn't too keen on TB's and the owner never showed any proof of the power it was making.

The box will suit it perfectly

Sweet nice to see another BRM 180 engine on here. Mine is same block and head, windage tray, ported inlet and exhaust manifolds, K-star fuelling, 16 row 235mm Mocal oil cooler. It made 193 bhp a few years before i bought it.

I bought the whole car in Sept 09 and irt had G60 BBS alloys same as yours did and also the same Kamei (GTi Engineering) rear spolier, strange.

Mine is almost ready to chuck into my car (the BRM shell was knackered).

Nice!! My shell needs a bit of tlc too but nothing too major. You got a link to a build thread or anything for yours? Did you have the head ported further?

If it was, there's no vernier pulley anymore. I have considered buying one though...
