The GTI I'm rebuilding is a "type 19" with the older type rear calipers. I'm replacing them with mk4 items, will I need "late" cables, or do the early ones still work?

Obviously I'm changing backplates, hoses etc.

Early still presumably, think it's the handbrake lever that is different and possibly tubes, had difficulty when swapped my late to discs due to inner lengths being too long, even tried Early and late cables.
The calipers are same fitting still as far as I know, so original ones are what you use.

yes still need pre-88 cables. difference isnt down to the cable routing but the style of handbrake lever. pre-88 is mk1 golf lever, cables go under the lever to a bracket mounted on the front. post-88 the cables go to a bracket mounted behind the lever, so this is why they're much shorter
