Mk2 GTi Syncro Build - Operation MOT

I was in a similar position with the abandoned 16V restoration project Sam - car in Ireland, yours truly in Canada and only making it home twice a year at best.

I really wanted to see it out but time and distance beat me - my cousin Niall to his credit got her restored and back on the road after I sold it to him. I made no money in this (quite the opposite actually) but I do have a serious stash of genuine, OEM and good quality Mk2 parts. At some stage I will start selling those off, (I'm hoping Tristan, Dave and fellow countrymen will assist me with that in the future) and I might break even - chance of a profit is extremely slim.

Your conversion is more desirable these days, along with all the parts so you're most likely in a stronger position to make a profit/break even - presuming that's the route you decide to go - it's difficult one way or the other, I would have loved to keep my 16V but it simply was no longer feasible to do so.

Fair dues Sam - the fact that your Dad will work on it while you're away is excellent and will keep the project going, I wish I had that support on the other side of the pond but that was not the case.

Aye, just put it on my list, seem to be do all the work and collecting parts for mates R32 swap and trying to get mine done between sorting out the other cars and phone calls ten at night as a mate of someone at work cant get their central locking to work on a skoda.
If I was more local I'd be round helping I'm sure Sam, think how lovely and shiny the bits could be and you have a smug smile knowing you did it.

I used to be of the "build everything myself" camp, but now I'd probably just grumble at the cost of the controller, then buy it, and be glad of the time I'd saved.

 

@Savagesam were you thinking about making something around the OpenHaldex project? Would be quite cool having a whole Haldex controller behind a button blank, DigiFiz mini style. Would happily help out with hardware design or software if you go that route!
