Well today I got given this little car. A Mk3 Golf GTi, and the most important part, it’s a Valver with MOT until October! It’s done 145k, but that doesn’t matter because this will be the base for my turbo engine. And I’ll flog the rest. Friend I got it from said that it’s possible head gasket gone, uses water and overheats. I drove it 45 miles home today and it was perfect but I’m going to take it apart tomorrow to see what’s going on. and the good part, I then gave it a wash as it’s been sat since December last year.
I bought a little blasting cabinet, it’s fantastic! Almost there! Painted in VHT paint, because it’s all I had about.
To be totally honest, i really haven’t thought that far ahead. I’ll have to do some research, I’ve heard there’s a raptor copy around for a fraction of the price.
Had a look into the possible head gasket, the rocker cover gasket was leaking really badly. I couldn’t see anything that pointed towards a possible head gasket. All the hoses off and I found this. John mentioned it being a possible cause, so I had a look. 15 minutes, and she was out. Also found this, as he didn’t want to take the inlet off to fit the flange. Still, almost there. Waiting on parts now. I’ve got a bit of painting to do but whilst it’s raining, everything is on hold
Thanks! Not much left, build a boot floor, find a fuel cell or get one made depending on price. I’ve ordered 1mx0.5m of 1.5mm sheet metal for my butt strap and I’ll have to get some more for the boot floor. Build the exhaust and I think fab work is done... although, I won’t say it just yet!
Awesome definetly made really good progress, depends what cell you had in mind i had a guy make my tank which i drew up charged me £80 delivered. You thinking of flat metal sheet for the boot floor?
I want a rectangle, basically, 50L, no bigger than 500mm deep, can we as wide as it likes, no taller than 180mm. Yeah flat sheet metal, I would get some rolled sections put in but it’s pointless as my boot floor with have enough points welded so I won’t have any wobbly noises anyway.
Hey Sam, do the clocks work ok on the valver? If they do work ok and when you come to break could you give me the heads up. My MK3 has only done about 115K but when I bought it the rev counter and fuel gauge had packed in and the only 16v clocks I could get show 245K so if these show 145k and work would be an improvement.
We’ve made some progress! Started the tunnel but I got bored of that. so moved into the boot. supports added. and some more all welded and ready to put the fuel cell in and weld the sheet metal on. oh, and POWER STEERING!!
Got a bit more done on the tunnel today. Whilst waiting for the timing tool for my diesel daily. ‘Got to have a syncro tunnel’ nah mate, I’ll just make it
Picked up some shiny bits this week. Front crossmember and GTi ARB, this has now dictated it’s going satin black underneath.
I’ve got about 1” maybe a tad more between the gear stick and the prop thingy under there. Not sure on exhaust routing yet, as it’ll mostly sit in the tunnel but when I come to the prop mount, it’ll have to sit a bit low of the car, which I don’t really want but hey ho.
I have that issue but its due to the downpipe at the junction where it meets the cat, how does it look at the back where the tunnel ends ? that is narrow area... i got about 3-4mm clearance off the prop and maybe 10mm on the exhaust
