    Hello all.

My Mk2 GTI 16v electric window motors have packed up (tested wiring etc today).

Is there a better motor you can fit?, seems like it's a glass out job to remove the regulator?.

I have a Topran full unit for the passenger side but if there's a better oem motor I can fit to the genuine regulators that may be a better bet?.

Managed to get my drivers window working again today but it's on borrowed time by the look of it.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

From memory you drop the window to access the securing bolts but then rather than remove the glass push it back up to closed by hand and duct tape it in situ. Then you can remove the rest of the bolts that hold the reg on and it will slide out easy enough

As for a better solution I'm not aware myself but surely a decent branded one with some lube on the cables will do you forever?

One of my motors stopped working some time between the car being laid up and me trying to get it sorted out years later.

Even did a 'how to' on the below, but can't find it now nor the images anywhere, but'll keep looking.

Anyhow it turned out to be the carbon brushes (there's one either side of the inner winding) had stuck just shy of making contact because the grease surrounding them had solidified over time.

Just the act of taking the motors apart freed things up, a clean-up later and they're still going strong.

Getting the motor itself apart was simple, it was untangling it from the rest of the mechanism that was the tricky bit, first attempt ended in the various plastic parts shooting everywhere... difficult to explain without images!

Thanks, I might have a go at stripping the motors.

I'll try and get my aftermarket regulator in the passenger side today and see if it's any good or not.

Passenger window is fully closed so I'll have to try ans get in to unbolt the window doesn't look like much access!.

Thanks, I didn't see a beam in the door.

I had to take the old regulator gearbox to bits to drop the window enough to release the window clamp.

The bonded metal strip on the window is in a sorry state so I'll be looking for a replacement window sooner rather than later.

The new regulator assy works fine so worth the effort.

no need to even tape the glass up, just lower the glass a bit remove the bolts holding to regulator then lift it up out of the retaining hooks and lower it gently inside the door. carry on with regulator swap, refitting is reverse of removal. you could take the glass out if you want you pull the outer scraper seal out the slot then drop glass and rotate it around 45 degrees to pull it out the door

if you find a replacement motor that matches the regulator you dont even need to do that just unbolt motor from door leaving glass rails in, pull it out the door enough to unbolt motor and swap. theres lots of manufacturers out there though not all of them fit the same

if motor is totally dead that makes life harder but you can still get to the glass bolts with a spanner, or unbolt reg from door and lower it down carefully with glass still attached. a 2nd pair of hands will help in this case. or tape the glass up as mentioned, remove the reg bolts before unbolting reg from door frame and lower it off the glass
