Mk3 Crossflow heads?

    Noticed that yank Mk3 8v cars tend to have an intake cover over the engine and the throttle body is postioned differently - like so:

    Is it because they are crossflow heads?

    If x-flow heads are better, why does the US 2.0 8v have the same quoted bhp as Euro, i.e. 115

    because manufactorys look for economy not power, at the end of the days its still just an 8v, but with alot more potential

    All 2.0 8vs in the US cars from 93 on up are crossflows.
    The MK3 here only came with the 2.0 8v, TDI or VR.

    That pic would be an ABA coded lump.

    my bottom end used to have a cross flow head like the one shown!

    why didn't you use it rags?

    and does it still use the dizzy in the block?

    US spec cars have allways been below the European cars in power due to emissions regs. The US spec 1.8 16v when it came out was still only about 125bhp compared to the 139bhp of the europe cars and this was considered close, other engines have been even worse on power compared to europe engines. By going crossflow in the US they can match the power of European cars with the quite harsh emissions regs in the US.

    They also like to keep the power the same between engines so they can use the same gearbox. This is the reason the original 1.6 GTI engine had 110bhp while it only went up to 112bhp with the 1.8. They focused on increasing the mid-range torque rather than big bhp in order to keep the same box.

    the reason i didnt use it was the guy wanted 350 QUID for it and i have a ported and polished gas flowed head anyway!

    the old distributor was used with a similar ring to the ones TSR sell......

    The US cars are also more tuned with torque in mind as opposed to HP. With the crossflow you get the long runners on the intake for that.

    Actually the main reason for the US crossflow was for crash puruposes. Dont ask me to explain it though.

    I'd hear this also, my best guess is that when you get punted the engine has further to travel before it deforms the bulkhead (and in turn, you), the old u-turn engines have more stuff at the back of the block.

    though looking at it it doesnt seem like a huge improvement..... must have got the wrong end of the stick again. :p
