You haven't bought it have you? Rear arches are listed as a problem area on this page.

Yeah I know it's listed as common problem on here, I had a look around and they seemed fine then pulled plastic off and it kinda just broke off

I just bought the one i looked at even though the passenger front sill is crushed and holed lol

The other parts all looked pretty decent but it was under an inch of dust.

not a good one no point saying otherwise,in my country we have very similar problems but only in the tailgates and the mid section of the doors near the outer door seals ,general build quality of the mk3 was never that great,we moan about crap window switches and regulators, heater cores, electronic coils, etc but when you see this you realise the bodywork prep/paint wasn't too flash also.
The value of these cars tends to make replacing the bodyshell a waste of time/money.

Jeez just seen your post what a rotter mines a 168k 3 door gti 1995 I had to weld plates in the rear floor were those grommets were and a plate on the doorstep ss well, but I have to say nowhere near as rusty as yours and its been outside for years as well (no garage) must say the old mk3 has been reliable though

    More rust spots :-(

    HOW I sympathize !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine also rusted through between the inner sill and one of the beam mounts.... so I had to take the beam off to get it welded......

and the bottom of the center rear-bumper-bracket came off with the bolt.
