    Tried to swap the Heater Matrix in Mk3 golf this weekend. Went throught the Haynes manual but it just isn't very clear. How much dash etc needs to come out and how? It says the metal piece from between the door pillars needs to come out and after removing all the mentioned bolts it just wouldn't shift. It's only bolted to the steering column with sheer bolts (not mentioned in the manual) [:x] . Also the picture with the fella removing it has no steering wheel, column or dash facia in it. [:s]

    What the fu*ck? I was fuming (still am). [:x] [:x] [:x]

    Can someone offer me a bit of a guide to complete this job. I'm losing coolant and at this rate I'm gonna need arm bands while driving. [:^(]

    I've moved this to the correct technical section for you, and given it a more useful title!

    Good luck mate. I think I'm fortunate in that I've not had to do a heater matrix - yet!

    This might not be much help mate, but i did this a while back, literally removed the whole dashboard and centre console. steering wheel... EVERYTHING!! not sure what metal piece you mean though, didnt touch any door trim. nightmare of a job. stick with it though and just work systematically. you basically need to get to the back of the dashboard, (right to the back!) once that is out you need to remove the plastic pipes ets that direct the air to the vents and dig out the heater matrix. stick with it mate!

    OK. Read the workshop manual cover to cover last night and came upon the *missing* information. Within the section for the Heater Matrix it refers you to Chapter 30 (or something) for a guide on removing the facia. The chapter is useless because the guide for removing the facia is in the chapter before! This chapter is much more useful as it indicates the locations of bolts I couldn't locate no matter how much I swearing was undertaken!

    My only query now is that the manual says I have to remove the Steering Column and Facia Plate (the metal section bolted to both door pillars).

    Is this really necessary?

    Seems a bit over the top.

    You need to remove the entire dash
    * disconnect the battery!!

    * remove vents (pop out with flat screwdriver)
    * remove center console (where headunit is)
    * remove the glovebox
    * remove plastics under dash on drivers side
    * remove clock surround and clocks
    * unscrew the 8mm bolts along the bottom of the dash and both bottom corner ones
    * remove steering wheel - not the steering column just the steering wheel

    * remove scuttle in engine bay
    * remove two bolts there and the dash should free away

    May take a bit of jiggling around to get out - I pulled out towards the passenger side as I've got a 280mm steering wheel and didn't remove it

    tip for the knee bar is undo the steering column from the uj at the bottom, remove the bolt completely then the knee bar and column will come forward together. just needs to be moved forward a bit, just enough that you can pull the matrix out the top

    I would lower the engine down till the bolt clears the leg
    Had the same a few time
    And if the bolt can go back in from the other side when you put it Back together
    I would
    They can't always
    You may have to take the front rear engine mount of to lower it
