On a recent trip to York I passed a car which I'm sure I recognised from the forum! It was a dub, may have been a polo though but it had all different coloured body panels. Only saw it for a brief second. It was parked up on the owner's drive and the owner was outside at the time - Was going to stop and say hello but remembered that I'm still driving the crappy civic as the golf is off the road.

So anyone know who owns this? :)

i think it was only supposed to be put in the vw show room but people really liked them and tried to order it so VW sold a few like it... pretty rare....

good if you get a car park dink - just go to a scrappy and pick any panel you like (off a polo obv!!!)

Yes supposed to be a dealer demo for paint colours but interest sparked a production run.

Also VW Germany were on a reduced working week apparently so it gave them something to keep the bods busy as they built each by swapping panels across from one car to another once off the line, hence costing of this motor was silly > 16v pricing!

A good few of these still around. Just imagine having a prang in one tho > lol. The bodyshop would think you were having a laugh!!

"good if it gets damaged"; some snobby motoring writer at the time did say the harlequin was 'perfect for bad drivers', and reckoned it looked as if it had come from a scrappy.

wrt the panel-swapping being done in germany; I heard at the time it was done by uk headquarters, and fitting a blue leather steering wheel was included in the job.

I haven't actually seen one for ages - that snobby feller reckoned most would end up with the swapped panels painted to match the colour of the shell. But I did see a harleqined air-cooled beetle back then, which didn't look freshly done.

I think they made something like 4000 of the Polos throughout europe, and hardly anyone bought them.
Not sure about the Golf, but I know there was much less produced and I think the only ones in the UK were imported from America, where I think only about 250 were produced? I've always wanted one though.
