As most of you have probably experienced, the exhaust never stays put on a mk1, especially with hard use. So with a bit of thought and some cheap parts from Halfords I came up with this simple solution: The position has held nicely for about three months now and offers a little more protection over large speed bumps too. Gurds
Here are some snow shots from the early year freeze too. Lost half the front splitter en route somewhere! Gurds
I think the snowploughing antics may have ditched the spoiler! Good work on the exhaust mount - I'd missed that update.
Been getting on with some more bits and pieces. The tyres have been catching the arches now and again so I got out the angle grinder and helped out the clearance a little... I put the plastic arch trim back on over the top. After that I proceeded to strip out all the carpet, insulation, roof lining, sound deadening, door cards, and anything else that I thought I didn't need. Because of loss of interior parts I needed to move the gauges from the lower console. I decided that I didn't need the ashtray anymore. I also had a bucket seat sitting gathering dust for a few years. As the seat is a pretty serious race seat, I think it suits the car's direction pretty well. I started off by welding in a Demon Tweeks seat rail kit in. Its the same as the one Steve used I think. The kit is very light and doesn't really cost that much. A few coats of etch primer Then a few coats of Halfords off the shelf spray cans. The seat I have is a Carbon/Kelvar Corbeau Revolution with aluminium side fixings. It weighs in at only 5.4kgs. But this seat has a slight difference in detail to your usual Revolutions... Only thing now is that when I have the seat in the right place, the steering wheel is little too far away. I have ordered a nice super deep wheel that should be here soon to help matters. Gurds
Painted interior looks very nice and clean and the carbon/kevlar seat! Trick VW logo. Having a look at the extra exhaust support and that looks nice and doable. Less chance of the system leaking with that added?
Cheers guys. I've got a standard passenger seat for track days etc. No plans to fit another bucket yet. James, the exhaust hasn't budged or leaked since the bracket was fitted. Gurds
Sounds good to me. Did you bend a bit of metal to form a hook to go under the exhaust clamp, or was that an off-the-shelf halfords part too from something?
The hook was part of a rubber exhaust strap from Halfords that I chopped up. the only fabbed part is the strip of steel across the tank strap bolts and a hole drilled through the chopped up strap sections to stick a bolt through. Gurds
Got my steering wheel in the post today too! I was looking at deep Sparco/OMP steering wheels but seem a little overpriced at 130+. I came across a similar wheel on the Rally Design website for a lot less dosh. Not Bad at 49+ vat eh? It had a dodgy looking horn surround with it that I dumped in favor of my Ferrari wannabe horn push. Gurds
Look great mate How much more distance did you gain with the wheel &d id you already have the boss, cost of it? Also any reason for not putting the dials up were the radio would be?
Looks nice, some good work! I had one of those steering wheels turn up from RD today too! Bargaintastic!!! But I agree on the horn push; a little naff but defo not worth the other 60notes that OMP/sparco cost. I've also done something very simelar with my guages... I must get a project thread up.
The steering wheel is 3" deep compared to the almost flat wheel I had previously. I already had a boss saving me another 35 odd quid. The dials are in the current location because the dial mounting plate was cut out from a gti gear lever console and fits the ashtray space better than the radio din slot. They don't get any reflective glare either from down there. Richair, I like your description of a mk1 16v, Stripped and scary! LOL! Ain't that the truth! Gurds
Awww shucks. . You guys are too kind. lol! Got some crazy ideas floating around in my head and not sure in which direction to go............ Gurds
Seems to go really well, as well as sounding good! Thanks for the help on Saturday morning, Gurds, when I turned up hungover and underprepared!
