I have a strange rubbing noise coming from my 97 mk3 8v when idling. It seems as if it is coming from behind the drivers front wheel.I thought it might be a pulley but not sure. The timing belt tensioner has been changed so it isn't that. Its not the alternator either as it was replaced for a noisy bearing.

    Has anyone any ideas?

Sounds like the belt rubbing to me, it happens all the time.

I've just had to change my water pump beacuse of the noise, and this week I need to change the alternator. Could be either of those.

FYI: VW is the cheapest source of waterpumps.

    Simon.
