My 1991 MK2 GTI 8v is currently in the garage having a new outer cv joint fitted - or isn't. The one I ordered and had supplied by VWHeritage has 30 teeth, but the shaft itself has 25 splines and doesn't fit. Eurocarparts lists the exact same part as Heritage have supplied. Can anyone urgently help please as the car is up in the air and the garage aren't best pleased. Thanks all.
Any help at all guys? I've got to let the garage know this morning what I want them to do, either put the old joint back on, take the car away and leave it for another day or source a replacement and get charged for two-three days ramp use. Any advice at all will be much appreciated as always.
Cheers Tristan. Everything I'm reading says the cv joint should have 30 inner teeth the same as the new one. At a loss why the one that has come off only has 25.
I'm just after checking a spare, old one that came off my mk2 Gti, and the inside of the outer, wheel end Cv, where it slides onto the shaft has 30 splines.
Cheers for that, appreciate you taking the time, that's what mine should be. Why it's got (and where it came from) a 25 spline shaft and joint is a mystery. I've asked the garage to put the old joint back on and I'm booking it in with a VW specialist who does alot of work on mk2's. I'm hoping it will just be a case of swapping over to the correct driveshafts but depends on why this odd one has been fitted. Thanks again though.
You're not wrong mate. It's not all bad though, the garage noticed that the offside shaft was held in by only two finger tight bolts. I've found out as well that anticks.co.uk are 20 minutes away and hopefully the car is going there to get sorted. Nightmare.
