If you can afford it get one of these, setting the dwell rather than using feeler gauges is much more accurate.

Yep, 48-52 degrees of dwell isn't it?

Bosch are normally 16 thou (0.4mm)

Been so long since I've fitted points

It's literally years since I've done it but you need to connect the meter (set to read the dwell) between the coil low tension wires, then run the engine read the dwell angle (switch it off then...)adjust the points until the required dwell is shown.

    Quick google found these instructions..

Find out the proper dwell for your system, Haynes etc...

    Here's a couple of hints :)

When you look at the points you'll see there is a small cut-out at the opposite end to the pivot, this is to put a small screwdriver in. On the dizzy base plate you'll see two raised dimples. The idea is to put a screw driver between the dimples and the cut-out and use the screwdriver to move the points.

If you semi-tighten the points you will be able to move them while someone cranks the engine but they'll stay where you put them. Not forgetting to tighten them fully once you're happy.

Don't be tempted to set the dwell with the cover plate off. As this supports the dizzy shaft without it the shaft waves around and you'll get a bollox figure.

Always double check the dwell with the engine running after set-up.

Dont forget to put a small ammount of grease on the points heel.

Oh and the correct setting figure is 47 degress + or - 3 degrees.

If you have trouble getting it spot on always go for less dwell as the dwell will increase with wear.
