My golf has developed a new noise which may have stemmed from my last track day at snetterton. It started making a sort of knocking noise on a certain hard right hand corner and on my last lap I got a sort of bearing noise grumble that I could feel through the floor, i let the car cool and then drove 120 miles home and only heard the noise once on that journey when I slowed for a 50mph limit briefly.

That was last month and I hadn't used the car again until the weekend before last when I did 80miles in the car and didn't hear anything.

I took it out again today to get some fuel and the noise is back.
I can't feel any play in the front bearings and they spin smoothly,

But I did find some movement in the output flanges which I have never noticed before

    Is that normal?

It looks like you're moving the cup in and out rather than up and down. In and out 'could' just indicate a circlip out of place .
Try lifting the the 2 drive cups up and down in opposite directions, this will give a better idea on the state of the bearings. Loss of bearing preload doesn't usually give X mm's of in/out movement unless they have collapsed. If this was the case there'd be rollers going around your box and probably wouldn't have got you home.
There could also be spring/washer failure behind the cup which is a quick fix.

The other failure in this area is worn splines on both cup and stub. It'll will look like the diff is moving but it'll just be the cups wobbling about. It would mean diff out and replace the worn parts.

Cheers for the reply a guys.

There is defiantly movement up and down, I think I'm going to remove the driveshafts so I can get a better idea of what's going on.

Where can I get some springs, washers and circlips for it? If it's any more than that I maybe popping up to see you Mart, if that's ok?

This box has a quaife diff in it if that makes any difference

    Cheers

    Paul

If it's a quaife then when fittingsome people refit the springs and brass washers but some people don't so if they're not there don't worry. It will feel loose with the circlip off though!
Id go as far to say that it's not a knackered diff. These are pretty bomb proof even if the box ****a a gear, they usually come out unscathed.
So, this leaves us with diff bearings.
Personally, on a box rebuild that's going near a track I tend not to put the factory preload on the diff and pinion shaft. Reason for this is that if the box gets too hot it could lose its running tolerance and burn the bearings out. It's not uncommon for boxes to knacker bearings this way. They're just taper rollers just like a rear wheel bearing, and they are prone to overheating on track days!

If you end up taking it out then send me a pm. As for circlip a and seals, you can get too ran ones from gsf quite cheaply. If you need springs and brass rings let me know.
    Keep us updated though :)

That's quite a lot of play . Hazarding a guess the diff bearings have collapsed or at worst, there's a drive stub problem. If it's floating that much there's a chance the final drive could be damaged with further use.

Was the circlip still in place. Can you move the diff about now with the cup off?

Circlips were In place, took them off and the flanges just pulled off and there are no springs or spring caps!

I can't feel any movement in the output shafts

Grab each one the best you can and see if the diff moves.
Like I said, some people refit the spring assembly, some leave them out. If the diff is sound then it looks like your cups are worn. How worn the diff splines are is another thing.
There just seemed to be s hell of s lot of movement for just cup wear so you want to be doubly sure the about the diff.
