Sorry if this is a stupid question, how will I know if the diff moves?.

There is movement in the cups when twisting them when they are on the shafts, which as you say the cups are worn and maybe the shafts

Literally get your fingers in and hold the diff splines, both sides at the same time and push the diff about, up/down and in out. If it moves the bearings are shot.
Whatever happens your drive cups are well worn!

I don't have any at mate. Not sure on new itemssltbough it's worth a shot, or find a low mileage box to rob them off.

There is a set on eBay with springs and washers, don't know if they will be any better than mine though, are the cups different from 8v and 16v?
I sold my old perfect working box last month

Do you use the springs with when you install a lsd ?

No difference at all. You just use the spring and cupped washer. There's nowhere for the brass washer to locate

Quaife say you dont need to fit them, but I have in the past. Getting the cup on is a nightmare as there's no thread in the diff to use a pulled on for the cup. The spring and washer are a tight fit so don't use the washer that sits behind the circlip. If you do you'll struggle to get the circlip on.

they are available new, not toooo bad at 51.16+VAT each I was expecting the price to be a fair bit higher. 020409285Q for 100mm ones, 020409285N for 90mm. The springs are 020409379B at 2.29+VAT each, washer is 020409378 at 1.20+VAT. If you wanted to get the seal/circlip repair kit from VW while you're there its 020498085G at 14.67+VAT

All 100mm 020 cups are the same. The 02k 100m cups are bolt in so won't fit.

Cool, thanks for that RJ, hmmmm do I buy new cups or a 2nd hand unknown box to strip the cups??

Cheers Mart I found a mk3 box in Kent and was going to buy that,so that was lucky lol. Some one on here has offerered a 8v box for 50.

How hard are the oil seals to change while it's in the car? I had a poke at one the other day and it seemed quite tight in there.

Gently lever it out with a screwdriver against the diff stub. Then, tap the new one in using the old seal to tap against( try not to mangle it too much taking it out) or something not too hard to place against it.
The topran seal kits from gsf are around 7 rack and come with the main oil seal, new circlip and the cap.

Is there any particular gearbox oil you would recommend? I think Rich said there was some expensive stuff already in it so I didn't change it before. But now it's drained out I want to put fresh stuff in

Personally, I wouldn't go spending mega money. It's a mechanical diff so you dont need funky oil. It's upto you though.
I've had no trouble with a std. ep80 hypoid in my quaife box.
