cant really add to any of the above, but the only thing that really scared me was becoming complacent about how much grip the diff will give, and ending up in a massive 2 wheel power understeer. with an open diff in the same situation youd just get the inside wheel spinning and the car would slow. the diff knocked .2 seconds off my quater mile too, which, was nice.
Hmm, dropped my box off at Stealth today and met Emma (Girlyracer) and Goldie while I was there.. Vince seems to think the detents (plungers that restrict movement in the synchro hubs) have 'jumped out' and "there's not much you can do on an O2O to stop this happening" Which is worrying... Will know more when I call in maybe tomorrow or Wednesday. Edited by: G_V_K
That I find hard to believe Popped into Stealth on way back to Worcs after school tonight... I've only gone and snapped the synchro hub for 3rd gear in half Vince has ordered a new one and I'm picking the 'box up Thursday I've got to pay for the hub as he's not got a decent one to re-fit Stealth are standing the labour charge, ALL the 3rd gear synchro hubs he had there had hairline cracks radiating from the detent grooves on the synchro hub He's fitted another 2nd gear as the other seemed noisy and replaced the diff seals to cure the leak. Not really, as I'm using a Mondeo 18TD this week , with a tiny power?? band between 2000-3000rpm Car is at home in Lincs, took the gearbox out last Saturday and brought it over here in the Mondeo of doom New synchro hub has been modified from VW, Instead of right angled detent grooves, the new ones have a radius, no doubt to reduce stress related cracking? Vince said it should be done tomorrow as long as (VW Hayes parts man) Darren's DTA re-map doesn't take too long. If not Vince will work after hours Friday so I can take the box home to re-fit Saturday, can't ask for anything more than that can you? Edited by: G_V_K
Vince is currently builing me a 020 2Y Box at the moment with Quaife ATB Diff. Problems you have had with your box from Stealth concern me to say the least!!!!! Please say my box does'nt do the same!!!
still convinced its not stealths fault - my box has been perfecto since its been there - makes a lovely "fast and furious" snickety click everytime i change gear, much to speedos annoyance. who by the way is having his box rebuilt there too, with an lsd popping in too speedo said there where problems with the diffs ...?
Your's is having the same new synchro hub as mine has mate as Vince noticed cracks apprearing on the one in the box. Rest assured It's something that's going to get a lot more attention on future Stealth boxes.
Well, if the cracks were spotted in the first place I wouldn't have had the inconvenience of having to remove the box after a week (400 miles), However, I can't really complain as Vince has done all he can to sort it in the time I can afford to be without my car. As said in a previous post, I have to pay for the part and not the labour which is fair enough IMO. Paul's box was ready last night, apparently the circlip groove for the drive flanges is in a slightly different place on the latest Quaife ATB diffs, this puts the conical part of the flange 'too far' into the flush fitted diff seals and then they leak as they're being spread out Vince has fitted new seals 'past flush' and they shouldn't leak this time. Sorry that you were the sorta gunea pig for the problem GVK but glad its getting sorted for you, hope like you say the problem is being looked at with future boxes (including mine). Hope my box is ready (with no probs) in plenty of time for Mallory!!! Need to fit that along with loads of other stuff and a trip down to TSR B4 the 21st!!!
Picked up my box today, re-fitting tomorrow. Tip - 3rd/4th gear synchro hubs are expensive things to snap = 79+ VAT Edited by: G_V_K
They've come down in price then. I remember paying over 130 a few years back [:^(] As for the circlip groove.....they're all out . I tend to keep the dished washer and remove the seat for the larger spring(as do Stealth). This way you still have the extra sprung tension on the circlip. Shouldn't leak though as the seal diameter is the same size along the cup, so really the seal should be sitting on fresh metal of the original size, although you can put the seal in in a different position.
