how do you mean you changed the pivot points?! Dont suppose you took some photos?! [:$]

How have you fixed your gear knob to the stick? Is it one of those grub screw jobbies? Cant stand em, always come loose!

I was thinking of taking an inch, inch and a half off, you reckon that will suffice?!

gearstick fits via the standard threads....i didnt lop a bit of the end

nah didnt take pics..should be some online if you search corado short shifter

you have to cut the pivot pin off and move it 25mm , then fit a spacer on the shaft etc , its not a 5 min jobbie

$20 including postage? i might give these puppies a try.

is there anywhere cheaper than the stealers to get the cables themselves?

in the end i bolted the cable bracket straight on top of the gearbox, just using a couple of washers to space it up a bit. saves $20 but doesn't look quite as trick.

got all the bushes for the shift lever yesterday, going to go outside and have a crack at fitting them now, might take a few pics as i go along but that american chap seems to have got it fairly well covered.

did you sort it so the bolts are a snug fit in the bracket though? on mine the hole in the bracket is way bigger than the bolt dia?

ive got a home made version of the gruven part on the go at the moment , will post some pics when its done

no, the bolts are a few mm smaller diameter than the hole in the bracket, but it doesn't really matter as it's tightened down firmly enough. the bolts are pretty much central in the holes, but i don't think the bracket being a tiny bit off really matters too much. or does it?

still haven't got my **** into gear to do the shifter yet, someone was taking an engine out in the garage all afternoon. 1971 mazda 616, quite a nice looking car.

what sort of an improvement is the gruven part over the stock part?

no i doubt those few mm matters....but if the bolt isnt snug in the hole then the bracket may move around

right, just finished swapping over all the bushes in the 02a shifter. i have to say i'm a little disappointed. there is a bit less slop, so it's better than before, but still miles off the rod-change feel.[:^(]

some of the vw bushes are not much better than the old ones. the little plastic ball was worth changing, also the horizontal black plastic bush on the shifter tower was pretty worn and has made a big difference, but the vertical white bushing in the shifter has just as much play as the old one, as has the one the gearstick fits into. i'll be returning that one as it cost nearly a tenner.

(edit: top tip: to fit the new plastic ball bush, cut two strips of card, 5x40mm, rough on one side, shiny on the other. fold lengthways with the shiny on the inside of the fold. put the strips into the plastic ball, shiny side in, and place over the metal ball. then pull on the two strips of card while pushing down on the plastic ball, it should just slip on nicely - a bit like using a shoehorn)

i'm sure most of the play is in the cables, but they're hideously pricey from vw. does anyone know of any other suppliers who sell the shifter cables? or is there a way of making up new ones?
