Hold on whilst searching for plug something has gone up in smoke on the wiring to steering column stalks in the past. Rj commented on my melted headlight switch white and black switch wire earlier in thread. I wonder if that's why I have non mfa stalks?

More melts to stalks wiring plugging into steering column

yeah thats a non-gti cluster harness you have there, and more destruction elsewhere so not good. I would replace it if I were you!

I might possibly have a spare harness in stock, send me a pm to remind me to have a look for it

Well since mfa is on hold turned my attention to rear foglight inoperative and hunted down grey and yellow wire to behind fusebox. Not connected to anything and wrapped in green tape

Connected wire to m which has 12v when headlight switched on

Well done pal, I had odd thing with my wipers, push the stalk and front wipers came on, pull it and nothing, fitted a new stalk, swapped the wires to pump around and hey presto sorted.

I think everyone needs a multimeter as a tool on vehicle when fault happens. Now for rear demister not working then dashboard back in.

I also see a nice melted end on the blue wire, plus a melted yellow/black, I guess part of the flasher stalk wiring. all in all, a bit of a state

The blue wire is what's connected to what's left of the white black to fusebox also running to melted black white at headlight switch. Somebody must have nicked their mums toaster cable and borrowed the neutral to rewire the meltdown.

    Whoof engine bay on fire.
Ran to get anything to put it out. Returned with washing up bowl all gone out

Returned I fear the worst. Cylinders locked with fuel. Pulled fuse 5 so fuel pump wouldn't prime. Got it started off lift pump? after drying out cylinders. Ecu is soaking wet with this silly rain and it drips on the plug in loom as part of the cover is not there. Sump full of petrol

usual cause is bad gearbox earth so be sure to clean it up nice. if its earthed to the top of the gearbox bracket change to later mk2 cable which earths to a stud on the end of one of the bolts holding the gearbox on. mk3 golf a good donor for nice battery cables, grab the bolt too
