DSC_1890.JPG DSCPDC_0001_BURST20200620163623107_COVER.JPG DSC_1893.JPG DSC_1891.JPG Just pulled the sump to replace oil pump with oil warning buzzer and light flashing hydraulic lifter tapping and a knock when engine hot after oil change and found this. The baffle has been smashed up into little pieces and blocked the oil strainer. Pump looks like its been replaced before. Do I need this baffle?

ideally yes, helps stop the oil sloshing about so much. I suspect when it was removed whoever did the job broke or weakened the clips allowing it to fall off and fly around in the sump eventually getting smashed up by the pistons.

VW still sell them 055115221B at 9.47+VAT. the 16v had a larger unit which also works as a windage tray but this is NLA though can be found on ebay for a little more money, but listings are all in europe so take a little longer to get here:

Aargh the strut top mount is split again
    Only just done it
Think it's riding on too long bump stops. Will I lose my bonnet when it let's go?

Get them quick before they are gone. Be aware when I put them on I unscrewed brake hose from caliper and rotated caliper onto brake hose with hoses pinch clamped to minimise fluid loss air bubbles etc
Pedal travel was a bit longer spongy at first till pads bedded in to their new position but has bedded in nicely now.
Bleeding is easy and I can do handbrake turns now haha
Shame they are hidden behind le castellet wheels!

Yep I think I will get a pair alright - I have a Motive Power Brake Bleeder - great piece of kit and the GTI will need a fluid change so could do the whole lot it one go.

    Cool
I flipped the master cylinder seals in an opel vauxhall astra 1996 once not sure vw would do the same though.
Am going to put my original calipers on ebay for someone to rebuild
Brake pedal fine passed mot handbrake not
The less disturbing stuff the better I say!

Well in my case it's a slippery slope - I have a rear axle beam (with new OEM bushes installed) new original stub axles and bolts, an OEM (ATE) pressure regulator, original rear pads discs and original clips and fittings plus new copper lines sitting in the wings - the original calipers would finish it off nicely and then just replace the entire back end. The rear suspension has already been replaced with original top mounts, bump tops, springs and covers and Sachs shocks (from my abandoned 16v project)

    Wow that's a list
    So all new.
I'm just maintaining mine to keep him on road. Cosmetic panel wise it's scratched and dented but Never been welded! And it's fun to thrash it within an inch of its life haha

I meant to say I have original VW real wheel bearings as well - so yes an entire new back end, just a question of when to do it - I want to sort a few more annoying jobs before tackling that (principally getting that idle/hesitation sorted on the GTI)

There is always something but always a cheap easy fix!
I had to use mk2 for a month as a work van as the garage could not work out what was wrong with my 1.6 tdi caddy
    £2750 repair bill later!
Golf needed new linkage gearshift in that thousand miles which I knew anyway about 14 quid haha

Oh I'm loosing 2.5 itres of coolant in 24hrs stood still after switching off at temp.
Oil golden reservoir and top hose empty and no temp guage.
Gotta be a low down leak? Or would leaking matrix pull it that low down through? Carpets not wet.
    Heater cold on top up.
What's best way to diagnose? Cold day so can see steam?
    Cold
