Starter motor problem

Can anyone advise, my old starter motor used to start but made that noise after starting replaced with a new recon &I can hear it wirring sometimes &when I turn it off, the whirring nose slows untill it stops,is it a faulty starter??or is it a relay.?any help please, ta Adam

Hi there, the only square plug i could find was on back of solenoid?is that the bit you ment?as its impossible to get out. &couldnt see nothing on the starter itself.is there a starter relay?in the fuse box, thanks Adam

 

Oh do you mean, disconect the start wire once started?

 

It means you have 12v start command from somewhere but check anyway with a light bulb on that plug and ground, or a multimeter.
This signal comes from ignition switch.

I had a 1978 audi 80 that did this. Burnt out starter motors every 2 months. In the endI used to start it under the bonnet by putting a spanner across the +ve from battery to spade terminal as had no money for an ignition switch. Make sure its not in gear!

 

But how will I start it,would as another member said, try,starting by using a spanner between plus and spade on starter,as he thought it was ignition,?

 

If I get a new switch, will my key still work?or is it the part at the bottom of ignition?

So the bit you change is at the bottom of ignition?so keep the same key?

 

Yes you were right, took the start wire of once started&it worked, put it back on &wiggled it &it was intermittent, but i noticed the alarm isn't working?is it linked to the ignition switch?many thanks Adam

 

Thanks, just noticed the alarm is not working, still got light flashing, but cant set it off, do you think it is the bottom of ignition switch that needs replacing?
