Got an issue with the starter on my mk2 was hoping to get a second opinion before splashing out on a new one.

Mk2 GTI, 8v box and flywheel, Mk3 Golf starter motor.

Problem seems to have arisen since re-installing my gearbox and a lightened flywheel. Turn the key and the starter clicks but then nothing. Rock the the car back and forth a bit in gear and it engages and fires up. Which indicates to me a solenoid issue and/or the starter not engaging properly with the teeth on the fly?
Had the starter out and in a vice rigged up to battery. Didn’t seem particularly lazy but its pretty old.

Seems to be an intermittent problem at the mo but needs dealing with as its fecking annoying lol

    Thanks!

had the same on our old polo, wqas worse when engien was hot. new 2nd hand starter sorted it

one test next time it does it jump solenoid with 12v direct from the battery, if it cranks up nice then look at ignition switch and wiring from it

Longshot but can anyone confirm the part number for a Mk3 8v GTI starter (or a diesel one that'll fit an 020 box)...

    Thanks!

The box has been painted but the flanges etc are clean and bare metal. Earths are good.

It's clunking against the flywheel and not engaging, almost like the teeth are worn or there's not enough oomph to fully engage. Rock the car back and forth in gear, it'll line up and fire up. It's especially fun doing this in public places :lol:

They are pretty straight forward to strip down. Give the solenoid mechanism a good work with a bit of oil and check the sprocket travels up and down the motor shaft freely.
They get pretty grubby over the years

I did the above and it was like new

    Legend, thanks RJ.

Found a 020911023F (looks like a Bora one) local. And that'll bolt straight up to an 020 box?

yep those numbers are all from the MK3 section, the MK4 also uses a version of the 020 box so thats why its listing it as Bora :)
