I use the synta in my van & 4x4, both track cars & road car & do lots of miles in van so easy 11 litres a month in oil changes & top ups, + 5L changes in trackers per 2 track days so get through a lot of oil.

Synta was getting silly at 18 for 5L so now swapped to the GSF Fuchs titan 10/40 semi synth- so synta spec, at vw 501/505 & API CF etc etc at half the price, somat like 8 for 5L if you buy box of 4 x 5L. Got final few tubs of Synta to finish then I'll be running on it

For a high miler: i'd used 20w50, especially in summer, and given the non-existant winters we're having at the mo. I get on Ok with comma myself. If the tappets don't like it, sort them out. Don't sacrifice the white metal bearings with too thin oil, just to quieten the sticking tappets.

    Hi all.

I'm sure this has been covered before but,

mobil 1 always for me, not cheap but one of the best. thin oil will not harm the white metal bits.
As for additives dont waste your money, get good oil in the first place.
if your engines worn out thicker oil will reduce consumtion, but if its that bad rebuid it.

engine below, endurance testing- 480 hp / 550 Nm of torque from 4000-6000 RPM on mobil 1

    Pete.

The point of it is to remove money from your wallet, place it in Ecotek's bank account, and give you absolutely no benefit.
    Like all Ecotek products, really.......

They've recently changed Synta and made it alot thinner than it was but most VW dealers will beat the GSF price on it, trade is 6-8 plus vat (changes all the time) and they sometimes run an offer with a free filter etc...

    thinner?

surely 10w-40 should always just be 10w-40

Indeed, and oil formulations if changed will generally stay within +/-10% of the 10w-40 viscosity spec, which would be absolutely impossible to notice.

itll depend how it lasts too. ive had some oils in the past where after a few thousand miles is has the viscosity of water and you struggle to see them on the dipstick.

my current millers 5w-40 fully synth is still nice and thick, sticks to the dipstick after 5-6k

More likely fuel contamination, maybe some polymer shear too (which poor quality mineral multigrades are more prone to) [:-B]
Still wouldn't be anywhere near the viscosity of water unless it had a serious amount of fuel in it.

What am I doing talking about this crap on my day off [:x]

I went into the main GSF (Feltham) the other day, and they definately don't sell synta anymore. Just that Fuch's brand oil.

My local GSF place informed me that VW UK are pi$$ed off that they have to compete with GSF on Synta prices so Synta have pulled the plug on it... No doubt, VW will eventually raise prices once all stock from GSF have depleted. Local GSF have Fuchs Oil in stock too now, although they have a few Synta silvers left, no more will be available very soon.
