Been meaning to start this thread for about 2 years [:$] i'm exhausted but its bugging me ,so no time like the present

I want to set a list of tools needed to dismantle a complete golf (be it mk1/2/3) no more,no less.
Its not the "ultimate tool box" or a "money no object" wish list, but the DIY novice list of the minimum needed or will help

The reason is,part of my project costs went WAY over budget through tool purchaces, and not having the right tools both cost me time & money [:x]

I'll start this off as an incomplete list then come back to it to revise if i think of more things too add or if others want to add their 2p worth (please feel free [:D])

Maybe a brief job description for odd tools would be an idea?

I had 2 tool cases with just about enough to break a car so here goes!

(in the next post to keep it neat)

A good trolly jack + (block of wood comes in handy)

NEVER EVER EVER get under a car if its held up with the standard scissor jack!!!

    Axle stands

    Sockets;

    Quarter drive sockets
    8mm - 13mm

    8mm (inner arch bolts)
    9mm (02A flywheel bolts)
    10mm very common
    12mm
    13mm very common
13mm LONG (pedalbox /servo,to name 1 job) MUST HAVE!
    14mm
    15mm
16mm or 5/8" is the same
    16mm (some front crossmember bolts)
    17mm very common
    18mm very common
    19mm very common
    21mm (old top nuts mk2)
22mm (new front suspension top mount nut with impact driver...)
    23mm
    24mm (steering wheel nut)
    30mm (hub nuts)

    Spanners

    8mm
    10mm very common
11mm (brake hose spanner) very important if doing brakes!
    12mm
    13mm very common
14mm (thin required for brake pipe)
    15mm common enough
16mm (deffo needed for some jobs)
    17mm very common
18mm common (both socket & spanner for front suspension bolts mk2 golf)
    19mm very common
    21mm (
22mm (suspension top nut / lambda sensor)
    24mm

Ratchet spanners are brilliant (10mm & 13mm most used)

Allen head sockets (sizes to follow)

    M8 spline (driveshafts)
    M10 spline (mk2 starter motor)

    Mole grips

    Pliers / needle point etc...

    copperslip & WD40/plusgas

good 1/2" breaker bar,3/8 smaller one a good idea (a long length of pipe will do if you don't get a breaker bar)

    Ball joint splitter

Nut splitter ( if your track rod end just spins to name 1 use)

    Topmount tool (front suspension)

    Impact driver (disc retaining screws)

Lump hammer = brute force & ignorance (for when temper gets the better of you)

    Cambelt tensioner tool

Irwin bolt grippers (life saver for rounded rusted bolts) at 2 x 20.00 for both sets not cheap mind.

Caliper wind back tool (if doing 2 x rear calipers more than twice)

    Stilsons (stubborn bolts)

    Blowtorch

Telescopic magnet "thing" (for retrieving the nuts and bolts you WILL drop)

just for starters so i'll finish it with good time (again & again)

Hope it helps those who are new to cars or tools wondering what to buy for jobs etc..

    Thoughts welcome [:D]

    Cheer's Chris!
    added you imput :-)
Feel free to edit the post if you wish/can etc..

I've been meaning to "edit" my own tool box to remove those few tools that are never used too, they must of travelled thousands of miles (no joke) and STILL havn't been of use!!!
Its a waste & weight,so must be put to one side (but not thrown out) as i'm sure many would agree?

I got a 48 piece spanner set from screwfix for 22quid thinking it would be pretty rubbish but handy, its lasted me over 3years of hard use including putting scaffold poles on some of the smaller spanners and iv never broken one, best 22quid I ever spent on tools. They dont list the same make one anymore on the website thou.

A small selection of 6sided sockets is always handy for any bolts you may be worried about rounding off.

Totally agree,it does not always need loads of money to get a competent "tool box" also i should of said that for most BIG nuts a 6 sided socket is the way to go,although some jobs need a 12 sided (like the 9mm 02A clutch flywheel bolts) and only a 12 sided will do.
Irwin bolt grippers are a life saver on our now old cars,as can bolt splitters but i'll get to them (i think this thread needs some more of my time, its getting complicated lol)

good set of allen socket bits, quite a few allen bolts to be found. dremel for grinding of stuck nuts/bolts.

18mm isnt a common size on the MK2 at all, the only bolt I can think of thats 18mm is the carrier bolts for 256/280mm calipers. note also new top nuts for mk2 are bigger than the stock size.

old top nuts are 21mm, new top nuts are 22mm. also, lambda probes are not 24mm, they're 22mm. Not that it matters on a MK2 as they very rarely have a lambda ;)

    Impact Driver - with a 1/2" drive.

I've used it for SOOOoooooo many odd jobs that it's silly not to have it, more for dismantling than anything else.

The other essential tool... 2lb mash hammer / lump hammer

I only added the images for folks that have never used them before (ie complete novice :))

Pin punch for door pins, and other stuff.

Set of Stilsons - pretty much anything that doesn't want to come undone
Set of wobble bars - head to manifold bolts, and other not easily accessible bolts

    From your inital list;

    `16mm or 1/2" is the same`

13mm is closest to 1/2"...

    Also essential, is one of these;

Has Allen, Torx, and spline bits (two of each in different lengths) with 3/8" and 1/2" drive adaptors.

Perfect for things like inlet manifolds, driveshafts, and various bracketry. Even has the correct spline bit for head-bolts.

Costs about 15-20 from those tool sellers you see at most shows.

Does anyone actually have a set of these that aren't rusted to f**k?

I swear they start rusting the moment you first open the box.

I'll add Irwin bolt grippers

and a good set of cold chisels (bye bye seized top mount nuts from hell [IMG] )

It doesn`t help that it`s been open to the rain on more than one occasion, and it also `discovered` the leak in the Mk3`s boot.

Ah...top mount nuts...you need one of these! ;)

All replies read peeps (many thanks) and post above now edited a bit more.

Whilst the spline & torx sets are great (and reccomended),i think if we keep it to sizes for specific jobs so the people who will only use it once can just buy 1 instead of the 20.00 box set,as those of us who tinker ALL the time, probably have a set or know purchase of one is on the cards very soon ;)
