Was that whilst kerb hopping? Stripping the teeth.... Not many other reasons why that would happen....?

It's been replaced with a new gear & is back together. It's done good service, so a new lease of life and see how it goes

With the gearbox out, it was an opportune time to give the 7.25" basket clutch a checkover. The car is driven on the road which is not normal service for one of these things, but it's coped pretty well. No centre springs and yet I was reporting back that it had got easier and easier to pull off junctions... suggesting something was, err, afoot!

Meanwhile scrutiny of its behaviour on-track suggested it might be slipping, though the black lines the car left behind suggested otherwise!

    Turned out it was overdue:

Whoops, caught just in time: 1.6 bar of rivet-undoing power! :o

So it needed a refurb. New centre-spring, updated to double-grey spec from single grey, after speaking with 16valver who has an identical clutch:

Also new cover plate, as the other one was scratched from the paddle rivets wearing through (+ warped as is common with these basket clutches).

The other side of the cover plate has a raised ridge which is the pivot for the spring:

There are different options to generate different clamping forces, in addition to the strength of the spring. The ridge position moves inwards for higher clamping force and the shape of the ridge profile is also variable [:-B]

These clutches are completely rebuildable, and are simple in construction, metal sleeves bolted through the basket to support the spring mechanism, with NAS bolts to finish:

    Should be back together soon!

    Caught just in time!

Good info. Did not realise about the raised ridge and different options there.

Cheers for the text Ali, sorry I was out & about when I received it.

The cover (the star-shaped plate which sits in the basket) came from the usual Tilton supplier. They're ~ 100 +VAT (the AP ones are even worse!)

It has been out, hence breaking gears, but the next event isn't booked yet.

    Update, clutch temporarily back together:

^^ The centre springs were being eyed for height / over-centre positioning. Quite a bit of meticulous work going on, checking everything is as it should be before putting it back together.

When the car originally had a 6-speed gearbox fitted to it, back in late 2000, availabilty of 02A/J Mk1 Golf conversion mounts was scant, so this were created. Finally the rear one has given up:

Not before time, and a great excuse to junk the standard rear rubber which was still in there. I suggested a purchase of one of the HRP rear 02A/J mounts:

As mentioned before on the engine mounts Group Buy, there's a bit of Group 4 Escort engine mounts about them. No coincidence seeing as the creator was a former Gartrac employee.

Busy, busy on both cars atm:

A nice surprise on the doormat today, full original printers' pdfs of the PVW article, Jan 2011. The back issues have long since sold out, so I persuaded Elliott at PVW it was a nice one for the 'net and so here it is.

Big thanks to Gary Hawkins photography for all of the shots. If you've not read it before then enjoy, and if you have, it's there if you fancy a read again

Nick / Duncan, I've just put up the Reeves part of the article for now and I can put the rest up here, or drop them on build threads - PM me :)

    Enjoy

Sharing a garage with Gurdip and they looked perfect together (we were next door with Nothelle mk1)

Was great being next to the Reeves family and i managed to have a few chats, they even liked my Golf which made my day :-)

Watching the car keeping close proximity to the BTCC Golf was the track highlight of the day, especially when i was watching their skills driving the beast from my own car.

Does anyone have any further info on the one lap shoot out that the Reeves mk1 did with Tiff Needell?
