    Hi there,
I'm probably the latest soul to hear about the faulty chain tensioner on the 09 to 12 2.0 tsi engines.
    I have said 09 gti!!
I've done a load of digging around as to what I can and mostly can't do about via the main dealers.
I'm hoping someone can shed any light on it here.
Is it EVERY engine or certain engines with a certain serial number?
'EA888 TSI engines' pops up a lot so is that the serial number I hope mine isn't?
    Any help greatly appreciated,
I will pay to get it changed if all else fails

I found this out when looking at an '09 A3 CCZA 2.0TFSI as I'm wanting to run two cars not have to work them simultaneously. It's not certain to fail, but it's an elevated risk.

Apparently the replacement part is on its third iteration and the second version is only guaranteed to be fitted to 13 plate cars according to the first USA link. What happens is it's hydraulic when then engine is running, but mechanical when the engine is static and it's in this mode that it can begin to fail causing the chain to slip.

My brother had an N47 2L diesel BMW which had a similar issue. They did eventually cave in after 7 years to offer a free tensioner replacement and chain/s check, but it had done 130k by then.

Ironically I started looking at other marques asked someone at work about his 207 GTI then found it has the same engine as the Mini Cooper S with a 6 speed. So I looked at the equivalent age later models which have a nice balance of fuel economy and speed with the mostly BMW Prince engine from 08, but also a chain tensioner problem
