ok, am just putting my new timing chains and tensiners/runners on.

in absence of the special vw tool for holding the camshafts in place (if anyone knows where i can get one, let me know) are the slots in the end of the camshafts supposed to be parallel with edge of the head, or just flat?

You can get the tool from VW. it is a cheap flat bit of plastic cut in the right shape.

Did you have to take the engine and box out to do this job?

Both slots in cams should be dead horizontal.
