I started to machine mine today, I'm also going to use a rod linkage and make up a new relay shaft meachanism to fit to the steering rack bracket. [:D] I made a model of mine in alias studio tools and animated into a movie too

Well I took a few pics yesterday and have had a route around my external hard drive for some of the development pics as well.

It is slowly getting there, this part is nearly finished bar a few holes and some thread cutting. Need to order some ali and get making in the new year.

I have managed to squeeze some time in during lunch and an hour here or there during the day. A few more parts have been started and its taking shape slowly. Im waiting on some brass and ali bar to arrive to start making the lever and bushes, then I can start on the engine side linkages too.

A bit of weight saving here, milled out a decent sized section from the core.

I have made a few of the other bits and bobs but it seems to be taking forever! Not helped by my OCD standards and the fact I keep changing things here and there! I will get some pics of the detailed parts up too.

    Very nice work.
No chance of this being a prototype for a production run in the entrepreneur section?

I am working on designs for the linkage and have a few solutions that i will be playing around with. Im going to try and utilise the existing shift bracket, I painted this one up in anticipation and ready to act as a test rig - many thanks to the very helpful classifieds and wanted section of this great forum.

I have bought some M8 rose joints and treated misalignment spacers for the linkage and will be using an of-the-shelf turn buckle to attach the shifter to the engine bay linkage.

And here are a few drawings of various parts of the linkage, i am still developing this concepts so things may still change.

A quick question to people, your answers will help me decide. I have the choice of changing the position of the gears and moving 1st from the normal left and forward to left and back. Changing the position of first will also affect the other gears too, I quite like the idea of 1st being left and back, what do you think?

    Dog leg style? Interesting...........

I think there was some motorsport advantage to that but cant remember what it is now? Although I did find some getting used to was in order when driving an E30 M3 which had it as standard.

lovin this, keep going, if 1st is left then back does that make 2nd straight ahead (left and up) or will it go to where 3rd would be. what i mean is then all main gearchanges (2nd to 3rd, 4th to 5th) are straight to each other which comes in handy on track, as a 2nd to 3rd gear change can cause grief if you dont get it right

just back from going over your build thread mr VW Singh, brings back memories of my MK1 days, what i dont miss now is not being able to take the whole front off the car for engine work!! The 2nd to 3rd thing is/was a problem i kept having on my 6 speed box, forever doing 3rd gear synchros, so to get rid of this could help, i know it's different on your boxes, but any time gained on track (cheaply) is a good thing. I would love a set up like this, i just have the tower from under the car now inside which really helps with the heat issue i had, then cables start playing up and selection got a bit not so precise. Smudge i'm sure you could 'shift' (sorry) a few of these kits

Hmm a dog leg box would be lovely, my friend had a Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16. I have been trying to make the mechansim dog legged but it is proving difficult to keep it simplified and I think it will be to complex. 2 4
I think i will run it as a left and down to first select and see how i get on with it. 1 3 5

My gear lever material arrived today, i was iching to get it on the mill and then turn it. Im looking forward to using this.

I turned the gear lever today, it went a little like this...

Turned and 'brush' sanded then onto the mill for some holes.

I turned this bush for the lever the other day,
    IMG_1834-1.jpg

And test fitted before the final cleanup.

Back onto the lathe for a polish.
    IMG_1835.jpg

Here we have the remainder of the material, the wooden prototype and the finshed lever.
