They’re some kind of retrimmed recaros. They never did a rainbow recaro as Far as I’m aware

Interesting, so it's not an Italian variant?

I suppose it's the best of both worlds, as stock recaro's are a little boring - fabric pattern design wise

I would be inclined to agree, they definitely have the look of Ford (Recaro) seats, like something out of an Escort RS Turbo

Yeah either aftermarket or ford seats with extendy leg base, middles trimmed with rainbow material. its a ford style 'recaro' badge so chances are they were ford seats. the rainbow seat grey fabric is the same as the standard 88-90 black and red striped recaro seats, but they'll probably have been retrimmed at the same time as they're all nice and dark grey

backrests are double tilt handle too so also ford or aftermarket as the VW ones only have tilt handles on the outside

ford ones with pull out leg support and actual badge vs stitching , side of the bolster also has the cloth going the wrong way , so not just retrimmed but badly retrimmed

only difference is the extendy leg bolster plus tilt handles on both sides, apart from that the seats are the same. I've got ford backrest frames inside my mk2 recaros, that way I can use 2x passenger backrest fabrics and you dont see any holes ;)

flip them over and take a look at the bases, some versions wont accept VW seat subframes becasue they have an extra frame welded on. so you chop that off and fit6 captive nuts and they're converted to standard VW/Recaro fit. Best to do this before the trim job :)

The loft in my parents place still has a couple of pairs of RS Turbo seats up there plus my 16v's rainbow seats, been there for around 20 years at a guess, after managing to get a set of the early trim VW Golf mk2 recaro seats, I was very lucky to come across them by chance for a bargain price.

Probably, yes they are wrapped up nicely they may well stay there for another twenty years yet never mind I still love them [:D] I just don't see any point selling them when I would want to re use them in the future and have to pay more to get replacements that are probably in worse condition.

I might also be guilty of this crime - I currently have the following stashed in my attic/crawl space - 16V under fuel pump assembly, used genuine (black) bonnet with original sound proofing, original (new) GTI grille and Hella headlight and spots, original big bumper wheel arch and side trims, original (used) black rear big bumper, original rear axle, original rear bearings, original rear discs and pads, original front hubs for a 256mm brake upgrade, non-original floor panel repair panels and wings, original (used) spare set of BBS alloys, new ATE (OEM) brake regulator, original (used) rear brake calipers and mountings, spare CE2 fuse board and yes an immaculate rainbow interior but that is getting put into the car and the original red striped interior (great condition) will be kept as a spare.

I have more stuff for sure but those are the larger items

There may be a major sale at some stage in the future but make no mistake I won't be giving it away - I shudder to think what mk2 ownership has cost me over the years and my obsession with OEM/original parts and gear.

Edit: I was actually thinking of what else I had stashed for the Mk2 and I made some sobering discoveries - I have a spare 16V throttle body, a whole bunch of Mk2 bolts, screws, clips, clamps, seals (windscreen and door) Hella rear tail-lights, front fog lamps (non-genuine) front bearings (non-genuine) genuine outer CV joint, genuine front and rear badges and decals, genuine (used) oil cooler, genuine (used) ISV, spare (non-genuine) rear caliper, genuine (used) spare GTI cylinder head (with cam), a collection of used and new genuine and non-genuine coolant hoses and clamps, new non-genuine water pump, timing belt and tensioner, new non-genuine hand-brake cables, genuine bonnet cable and handle, genuine (used) rear side carpers and parcel shelf/speaker supports, genuine (used) space saver rim, 2 genuine Mk2 owners manuals/kits, genuine sales Mk2 sales brochure and spec. sheets, non-genuine front wheel arch liners and guaranteed I'm forgetting some other bits and pieces and that does not include what I sold to my cousin when he agreed to take the abandoned 16V project off of me. :o
