mkIV, maybe a '98 bottom end model with 80k.

clever people would buy about a '96 1.6 glx or 1.4 16v with lowish mileage for that money though.

yep.. second car, my wife uses the pug.. I'm after something to drive to work in. So I'm looking for something which won't cost to run and repair and is respectable... so no Saxos, Fiestas or Corsas.

I'd go for the 1.6 8v as a daily driver rather than the 1.4 16v. better bottom end torque, better for daily driving IMO.

possibly more expensive tax though? (although insurance should be less).

insurance is less for the 1.6 8v than the 1.4 16v.

As the 1.6 8v is still seen as a "normal" car where as the 16v is kind of like the "sport" edition of the mk4 Polo.

Another thing though is that you don't get as good a spec with the 1.6 8v. 16v has things like bigger bumpers, smoked rear lights & clear indicators etc...

the 1.6 glx is the same spec as the 16v, same bumpers/interior/alloys, etc. options include air con (quite common), and abs (never seen one without tho).

but its a much lower insurance group )put it this way, my girlfriend has a glx as her first car). don't confuse the 1.6 GL, which has a much lower spec (no nice bumpers) but same engine.

1.6 8v is supposed to have 75bhp (i reckon the true figure is at leasy 10 more tho) but you'd never believe it was that little. will get to 100mph with no fuss (may well go over easily as well, the girlie was driving, not me).

1.4 16v is 100bhp, but another 3 insurance groups as well. 1.4 8v is dog slow, as is 1.3 and 1.0. diesel is unrefined, nothing like the modern vw diesels.

so to sum up the 1.6 8v glx is the best buy of the lot, only downside is it costs more to tax, but this is usually balanced out with insurance cost.

    here's my girlfriends car...

    polo 1.6 glx

cost 2500 a year ago with 75k and fvwsh.

and my ex just bought one for the same price with 40k, but its dark green (dragon green) which is the 'common' colour so it seems. silvers the colour to go for if you can find one ;)

Thanks all for the input... the GLX is the one, whats the SE all about??

Rags, i was going to use the Benz, but i'm concerned with the fuel bills and general increase in miles.

To be honest... I fancy a little project ;) ;)

    their insn't a mkIV ('94-'99) SE model. only in mkV ('00-'02) which i don't think you'll get for 3k.

i'd get a top end mkIV over bottom ned mkV. i do like the mkV's though, but too pricey at the mo, and they are effectively a facelifted mkIV.
