    Hi there,

Today I changed the oil in my 02A gearbox - I put castrol EP80W in (80W-90) as advised in the halfords catalogue - but it now feels slightly notchy into the gears.. I must also confess that to get the level plug back on, I jacked the car up a bit and some oil came out (maybe 100 or 200ml) so it probably only has 1.8L of oil rather than the 2L required.

After checking I see the spec should be 75W-90, has anyone used castrol EP80 in an 02A before? Would anyone advise changing it again?

    Any help is much appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Scott

I continue to use millers 75/90 TRX Synth i think its called, fully synthetic. I'd would make sure there is enough in there as well if you put slightly too much in it will just spit it out of the breather.

if it was me I'd go for redline MT90, this oil is tried & tested for 02a gearboxes :)

well I was, until i dropped it out less than 2 years later and it was a manky brown sludge. and that was in a practically brand new (fully rebuilt, new gear kit) box.

Put some standard VW stuff in that they recommend. It seems to work well as loads of 100k boxes are still working after using it ;)
