Just wondering, what's this yellow stuff on my gearbox? I've seen it's also on a few other people's boxes and wondered what it is..

It looks messy, so can I remove it? I've taken some of it off and it's pretty tough stuff to remove as it just spreads everywhere!

Hmmm... yeah, still no clue.[:$]

Could it be something like a body seam wax that dripped or something from the firewall area down onto the diff area?

I'm not aware of anything from the trans, or anything used to seal or mark the trans casing... sometimes I'll find paint spots on bolts and so on, but nothing messy on the outside of it, other than a few decades of grease and road grime:p

Someone get a pic, I'm at a loss, and want to know:clap:

    Far in.

I'm going to have to go look now.... I don't recall it, and if I had seen that in the pic and was asked about it, I would have assumed it was the yellow grease pencil that junkyards use to mark the trans, but I will go look, and see what it is.

At any rate, it is safe to remove it:lol:

I found others out there with yellow in that area as well.... I've never paid any attention to it. I wiped on it with a towel, and it came off a little, the stuff I noticed was the color of the grease pencils, but it wasn't waxy, and seemed like a marking from paint.

Kerosene must remove it, or I failed to notice it after removing the other grease, and sandblasting absolutely removes it, because my rebuilts don't have it, and blasting removes most any stain:lol:

Anyway, I have no idea why it is there, something from VW it seems, but it is safe to remove:p

That's interesting to know, I wonder why it's there then!

I shall go right ahead and get rid of it then :)
