I've just had a wire burn out - <see thread> and dont have the horn wire connected to anything, not sure if this was the cause? Or if the wheel/horn ring is sitting too close?

I also had this bush on the column already:

Possibly the same as the 811 bush? I left this one on and did not fit the smaller 191, maybe a bad choice...

The adapter is positioned pretty much bang on to how it came off. (sadly not taken at the same angle)

just had another look, the tall spacer is for pre-90 column, short for post 90 doh! wont make a difference to the spacer though as either way the spring will seat to the ign lock housing, not the plastic spacer. as long as there is no play between the column and the ign lock then its ok

it looks like you have to pull the column- it's far too in.

How do you mean? The upper picture doesn't have the stalk units attached, if it's giving the wrong impression.

I've just noticed something, in this pic I see a thick metal ring:

is it also fitted in this picture, and therefore means your adaptor ends pretty much straight after it tapers out:

If so, I think the thick metal ring needs to be fitted :(
All the adaptors I've seen have been the full height from the spline to where the spring is in pic 2 above. If yours is in 2 parts that could explain some things...

What joy it was getting that adapter off before! Oh well.

What we're saying then is that with the metal ring fitted in between the spring and the adapter (as it should be installed?), this will, in effect, pull the column that bit further out? Obviously the adapter sits in the same place on the end of the column on the splines but that metal ring will eek out the column a touch?

thats what I think, I'll get a pic and measurement of my spare adaptor, then you can compare this to yours :)

Could it mean that something is running to close to something else to cause a short? (if it's not the bottom screw/earth)

    Cheers!

thats the thing, even if the wheel was shorting on the column, the worst that would happen is the horn would be going off all the time, it shouldnt cause the issue you had in the other thread [:s]

Clearly not a steering wheel fitment problem in that case...

Do I still need to fit that ring under the adapter?

I'm having similar troubles at the moment, I can't get the stub off as I havent got a puller or anything like that, so I'm trying to take the column out to make it easier.

But how on earth do I remove the column? I've undone the bolt on the UJ like so:

But the column still won't budge?

you have to remove the bolt completly otherwise the column wont budge :)

I measured a spare adaptor i have and its 4.5cm long, if yours is shorter than that then chances are you need to fit that spacer ring underneath it :(

and after that you have to unscrew the bolt that secures the ignition lock to the tube, and pull the column with it.
