They believe everything they read on the anti Apple sites Mike. There is almost as much BS spouted on the anti Micorsoft sites too.

Having played with it all day today, i have to say that its a fantastic bit of kit. So impressed with it. Roll on 6pm GMT when the new iPhone will be announced......well, maybe a bit later at the end of Jobs keynote.

Because he says what apps stay or go, thats only the tip of the iceberg too. This is not something Ive read either gentlemen;), Its actually scary how much he intends controlling things.

If he was trying to take over the world wouldn't he make his products decent enough to last 13months not break after 12? Oh wait people dont seem to mind buying something 2-3 or even 4 times in some cases, more money for world domination?:p

...and your extensive inside knowledge comes from where, exactly?

There's no restriction on what you can surf on the internet, provided the device supports the technology. The restriction is on what Apple are prepared to take a cut from selling you - so no porn, spam, malware, etc on the App Store. You can find plenty of whatever you want on the net though... right on your phone.

Of course, you could go for a windows mobile phone and be a victim of the the new viruses and spyware that are embedded inside seemingly legit games. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

My Macbook is 3.5 years old.

My 2G iphone was sold at 18 months old, working just fine.

My 3GS is fine at a year old.

My iPod 2nd Gen Nano is about 3 years old and works fine.

My iPod Shuffle is 3 years old and works fine.

Your point is? If you don't look after your stuff, I'm sure you can break it sooner.

my ipod mini is 6 years old and works perfectly fine!!!! some people do talk utter utter cack.... he wants to control what we look at on the net? He controls what apps go on his app store as they are seen as endorsed by apple - he would be an idiot not too.

The web browser lets you look at absolutely anything you want, so how's he controlling what you look at on the web I have no idea.

Oh and luke - how come an unlocked mifi? what's wrong with a 3 version?

I lived with loads of different graphic designers/music producers/DJ's so they where all apple lovers, Iv seen 700quid laptops break countless times while my cheapo 250quid laptop is now 5years old with no problems, Iv seen at least 5 ipods die for no reason and they are totally unfixable, one desktop totally died in the guys 3rd year of uni and lost all of his work. Another laptop packed up in the middle of a set in a club with 500odd people!(that was pretty funny)

Like you say though Mike if you dont look after stuff it will break, but when your paying such a stupid premium for stuff I personally expect it to be of a better quality, maybe thats just because I buy stuff for quality not because the media make you think you will be fashionable and cool if you buy it.

I work for Apple, btw, so I want to be clear about that. All this talk about Jobs taking over the world is just paranoid ranting. Maybe you should see medical advice, or just stop smoking the carpet? I guess it's a measure of success that Apple is now regarded as 'Big Brother' rather than the cool outsider's brand.

Anecdotal evidence is worth little. Who knows how your '5 iPods that just stopped working for no reason' were treated up to that point. Industry surveys seem to rate Apple higher than the competition for quality and customer service. It's all out there on the net if you want to have a look. How many artists do you see going onstage with a Dell machine... erm... none.

I dread the idea of going back to using a PC... I've borrowed a windows laptop to tune megasquirt and it's just shocking trying to use the thing. By the time it boots up I could have done what I needed to do on a Mac and be driving the car.

Like I said, you pays your money, you takes your choice. More and more people seem to think the products are worth the 'stupid premium', clearly though, you're happy with your slow, virus ridden clunker. I guess you're not doing anything too demanding on it, as most 5 year old PCs won't run new versions of Win-doesn't, or do anything much.

Im not a blinkered idiot. Ive had a PS, PS2 and decided on Xbox for the next gen. More so a choice because all my friends have them, and id rather play with them than without them.

All my apple devices have been superbly reliable, superbly fast and supremely well designed. Ive never had a single item break. 2x iphones, 2x macbooks, ipod nano 1st gen was still working fine, ipod classic had hard drive failure, but not a fault of apple, ipad is just pure sex from a design and function perspective.

Just not a fan of being tied into the 3 plans. Id rather choose my own 3G sim. Want to find one with credit that doesnt expire.

Having said that, ive looked a the 69.99 MiFi deal, with 3gb that expires in 3 months, and its not too bad a deal. Once its run out, its another 15 for 3gb.

Wish id known you work for apple when all my housemates where going mad with there stuff, I could of picked your brains on that aswell as VW stuff

Oh and I can download stream music/video, browse the web and run etka/vagcom all on XP just fine on my slow virus ridden clunker knowing that it owes me no more than 50pounds a year. I havent turned the thing off in months, just let it sleep so no slow restarting. I had a vista laptop but gave it to my mum as I just didnt need it.

Apple products where originally for the graphics/music industry, they became a fashion accessory with the ipod and since then have just totally abused the fact people are careless with money and will happily spend to make sure they are up with the latest trends, they know that they can release a product that isnt as good as they could make it so they can release a new one 6months later so people will spend more money. Yea they make some nice stuff but in my experience it just breaks far to easy for the cost.

Maybe all three of my houses where cursed because the stuff in some cases just fell apart and normally shortly after warranty was up, in my last house I lived with a graphic designer and 2 music producers/Dj's, it was a running joke about how me and the other non apple lads cheapo PCs where still going strong and there laptops all had problems, one guy I knew speced up a laptop to 3.5k for music production and the keyboard packed up after 3months (fixed under warrant no problem but not really the point)

I've just been chatting with Luke about Apple stuff. I have got a HTC Desire now, but I must confess the new iPhone 4 does look amazing, especially with regards to the display.

I think a lot of this comes down to who you are, what you do and what you want to use the device for. I used to use an Apple iPod a few years ago (it was a colour one; not sure what particular model it was) and it was excellent. I only stopped using the iPod because my new working arrangement meant I was using my own personal laptop PC constantly for work, so I just listen to music straight off the laptop now.

About Sony stuff. My laptop is a Sony Vaio BX396VP. It's probably nearing five years old now, and it must see at least 16 hours of use a day. It runs Windows XP and it has never suffered any hardware failure, and it has never even required an OS rebuild. The original battery still holds its charge just like it did when new, pretty much. It was an expensive laptop for its day and, unlike the cheaper laptops with horrible squidgy keyboards, the build quality of the enclosure and keyboard is very, very robust. The only "damage" on this machine is how the plastic on the top and keys has actually worn away and pitted after being subject to thousands of hours of me touch typing / thumping code into it. So there you go, I would never knock Sony, and my next laptop will be a Sony too.

Carrying an iPad around with me would probably be no use, because I don't really use the laptop for "media consumption"; I'm using it to run specialist software.

Going back to the HTC Desire, one of the things that attracted me to it was that I could use it as a modem for my laptop (I'm too unfashionable to use the word "tether", so excuse my use of the word "modem" if you please) and not incur any additional charges. Because of my working lifestyle (being away from home a lot and often needing web access on my laptop without WiFi available) I find that pretty essential. I acknowledge there're ways around the limitations placed on tethering with the iPhone, though I'd prefer not to have to cart around extra SIMs, a MiFi, or whatever when the HTC can do everything I need it to.

I think Apple stuff works and looks amazing. The build quality of Apple products has always looked and felt solid to me.

I think it's all down to what you use your devices for and what you get out of them.

I agree about bootup times and things with Windows PCs. Waiting for XP to start up really is a PITA.
