I need to change my mk2 golfs outer driveshaft gaitor. I need a breaker bar, so halfords sell a 3/4" breaker bar but not 3/4" 30mm sockets to fit it. How dumb is that?! Eurocarparts sell 3/4" sockets and bars, even 1" ones but I have to wait 3-5 days for delivery! Where the hell can I get a breaker bar of decent length (min 60cm) with a socket to match, for tomorrow? Thanks.
You've probably got a Machine Mart near you... http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/laser-2381-power-bar-24-34-drive & http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/search/filter/30mm+sockets/type/any/page/1 ...can't vouch for the quality, but it might get you out of a hole.
Whats wrong with a 1/2" breaker & socket? i've done "loads" of driveshaft nuts with mine with no problems,i use a multi-sided socket too!
i own a half machine mart breaker. it has done hub nuts with 4ft of exhaust for leverage it also did the 29mm crank bolt on the 928. 290nm or something daft and i had to undo it. the breaker bent maybe 30* but still survived
thanks mate, there's one not far from me! I've had a few 1/2" sockets snap on me before so I try to get more beefy stuff now.
Fair enough if you've had a few sockets break on you,i have seen a bar break its pin too. Having said that,if you were to buy a 1/2" bar & 30mm socket from Halfords and it broke on the nut 1st try,i'd march back & ask to see the manager and have a word. Its a nut torqued to well under 200 lbs-ft (supposedly) I've done over 20 on mk2 to mk4 golfs with mine so far. Good tools do cost mind so i understand only wanting to buy once.(mine are cheap so i can't complain if they break)
Iv broken a machine mart breaker bar undoing a hub nut but I did have 5ft of scaffold pole on it and I went and bought another identical one and its been fine for loads of different hub nuts on different cars, it was a pug 806 that killed my old one.
For the OP - you can get 3/4 to 1/2" adaptors that'll do the job. I've got a 1/2" draper expert bar, which seems fine with 14 stone of me standing on it
the machine mart is lifetime warrenty too http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/pro77-1-2in-drive-breaker-bar http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/clarke-pro210-half-inch-drive-breaker-bar
After phoning around mobile mechanics, some were too busy and some didn't pick their phone up. I tried with my 1/2 socket set and it seemed OK with me bouncing up and down on it so I've caved in and just reserved the halfords 24" 1/2 bar. Gonna go and pick it up now. Cheers for all the replies
I snapped a 1/2" halfords breaker bar undoing a hub nut on my old golf, but then used a Halfords pro 1/2" ratchet and a 4 foot scaff tube to undo the nut with ease and without damaging the ratchet I took the broken bar back to halfords though and they swapped it for a new one
they do sell a 30mm socket to fit their breaker bars, i think you need some new glasses tip: look for 6 point 'impact' sockets
I was on about the 3/4" drive sockets, they don't do 30mm ones.. I already had a 1/2" 30mm one so that was cool. Used the bar to do it back up today. It made the job really easy, thanks again chaps.
