Just treated myself to a 2005 GTI, so far extremely happy with it. What is the best fuel to use in these? I believe VW recommend a 98RON super? Have heard 95RON can cause rough running and power loss? Any of this right? What do you put in yours? Cheers S.
No. Early GTis with K-jet have to have 98 RON, unless you adjust the timing. Then, power is reduced! Later cars, with Digi, can run on anything, cos. they have a knock sensor, and the ECU will adjust timing to suit. Thing is, if you use lower grade fuel, you will lose power. From what I read, Shell 98 RON is the very best. In Eire we are not permitted 98 RON.
Used to own a 1988 16v that I only put Optimax in, ran fine. I also had a 1992 2.0 16v mk2 that ran fine on standard unleaded. Cheers for the comments, but my question was about Mk5's?
Surely, my post, #3 explains. If you have a later car, post 1987, you can use any fuel, but, if you used low RON fuel, you will lose power!
IIRC the fuel label in the flap for the MK V FSI models says 'Super Unleaded Only' or 98 RON. So check the label or the handbook.
We do have it in Ireland I've only ever seen one petrol station callaghan's in burt Donegal! at 1.70 a liter these days! Certain maxoil stations have E5 99 ron same price as ordinary unleaded.
Yes I know about the Maxoil E5. This sounds like a flipping good fuel. I got in touch with Maxoil and they tell me that the nearest stockist is just 60 kms away. Donegal's even further. But, I'd pay 1.70 a litre just to keep the EV happy!
Quite surprised it says 'Super Unleaded Only' on the label! Our lables say: 'Unleaded Fuel Only - Premium Rec' or in Froggy speak: '..................... - Super Rec' AFAIK. All VAG cars since about 1987 with Electronic FI, Electronic Ignition and Knock Sensors can cope with 95 RON or above. Some cars, especially US and East European Spec. (GUS) cars, can cope with 91 RON. They sold TSI and FSI in Eire, where we have been unable to find local supplies of 98 RON for years now. I had a go at the local Audi dealer and asked if they informed their customers that the RS cars they are selling produce less power than the brochure cos. they can only get 95 RON. Cors. they don't!
Yes the engine will run on 95 ron, and adjust to suit but not ideal 98 is great for the car, which is recommened for them as it being reconised as UK highest quality fuel In europe 100 Ron is readily avaible and recommened on the fuel flaps In the UK VWUK can't use the correct terminoligy to describe the FSI due to 100ron not on the forecourts
Cheers Crispy. Worked out putting a full tank of V-Power in over standard unleaded was only around 2.40 more at my local Shell. Not much to pay for looking after your motor as best you can. Still, all fuel prices remain insanely bad
i always fill up with shell v-power. like to think tht im getting that extr bit of power if you join the shell drivers club you can get money off fuel vouchers whch helps with the extra cost.
This is what VAG says about your engine. Note green highlight. In fact most engines, in Europe that have "ROZ98" recommend on the fuel lid will run with fine with "RON 95" with reduced performance.
Thanks guys. Think I had a V-Power card when I was running my first mk2, but have lost it somewhere so I picked up another club form the other day. Think I'm going to use V-Power from now on, may as well get the best out of the engine!
turbo cars really benefit from running super unleaded or v-power/tesco momentum i saw an article a while back with a family car (1.6 c4 maybe), a golf gti mk5 and and impreza and the family car made no difference in power but the golf made about 10bhp more with super and the subaru made loads more. my last car was a clio 197 and i always used momentum or v power as it ran terrible with 95RON. it didn't feel any more powerful but it ran a lot smoother especially when cold. my golf will get nothing but the good stuff in the tank when i get it.
