Hopefully I have just bought a set of MK2 Driver clocks to put into our car. This is for the rev counter essentially (I know it won’t have MFA). As you know the car now has a MK3 GTi engine and it is CE2. Will the rev counter work by simply plugging the clocks in as the electrics stand at the moment or do I need to find some extra wires from somewhere?
For mfa i had to wire in 6-7wires to cluster and a vacuum line. I get 9-12l/100km, 19-26mpg. Not a lot for 100 something hp.
Is that on a petrol engine ? Or is it your old diesel ? Seems high for a Diesel engined golf but right on the money on a petrol lump !
the mk2 rev counter wont work from the mk3 ecu signal, so with the mk3 ecu you have 3 choices: 1. convert back to mk2 coil+tci setup, run rev counter g1/12 or d/26 depending on fusebox to coil negative same as factory mk2 2. open the flap on the side of the mk3 coil and run the rev counter wire to the negative terminal inside 3. fit tach adapt module same as the mk4 converters do, james e looms of ghetto motorsport makes an inexpensive one
I knew it wouldn't be straightforward Number 2 seems to be the least hassle? Where is the rev wire you speak of?
directly to the ecu, its a green/white wire. so chase this wire to the coil, snip it and run fusebox end to the coil negative and leave the ecu cut side insulated in the loom
well can just unwrap at the coil and cut it there, its the only green/white in that section (check fusebox end g1/12 to make sure its the right colour, sometimes can differ) the tach adapt goes at the fusebox end needs ignition live, earth, tacho in and tacho out. is a bit neater, and you can use it on future engine upgrades too. there is a 4th option, if you chase the circuits on the cluster PCB you can bypass the signal fiultering then it'll work direct from the ECU signal, but thats a more advanced method
Clocks arrived. Couple of questions. What’s missing from here? And there seems to be a small peg broken off here which holds the blue plastic in place. Does it matter?
Also, @rubjonny which is the negative terminal? Does it correlate to one of the pins? And….. apologies, I know you said wire colour may differ but this is what I have at the coil. Black, brown and red/green.
Clocks are ok, on the speedo would be the vehicle speed sensor, not many had this, mfa and some.. I fitted this for the mk3 ecu because idle was high with fault code missing vehicle speed. After i fitted vss idle went down to 700-750. Nothing to do with the plug. Its the connection between power transistor and coil.
