What would be useful is knowing which cars require more Torx & splines.

I can get away on Mk1s with an M8 spline, that's it.

Mk2 needs an M10 spline, no Torxes AFAIK.

Mk3? etc.

 

has anyone mentioned a torque wrench yet?
i found 2 were needeed. one for the smaller stuff, and another for the head etc.

i found halfords professional tools fantastic value for money. their 100pc kit is hard to beat. its all lifetime guaranteed, and they never quibble with a replacement

 

Including the ratchet mechanism?

They refused to change the last one I knackered, then tried to sell me a repair kit

 

ball joint splitter? (scissor type for me!)

Needed a 12 sided spline tool for some MK4 driveshaft bolts yesterday, can't remember the size though, I will check and edit later

Needed an M8 6 sided spline and a lump hammer to get rear caliper carriers off a MK3 after I rounded the hex shape out completely. Although that was before I bought some Irwin bolt grippers

Zippo lighter for lighting said blow torch and for heat shrink tubing.
Spray anti septic, Super glue and spray plaster and duck tape for a quick "combat first aid"fix

 

1/2" drive breaker bars in 18" 24" and 32" lengths, socket sets in 3/8" and 1/2" all sizes from 8mm to 30mm, torx, allen and spline bits in as many sizes as you can get, also a screwfix utility bar and claw hammer, lump hammer and bolster chisel is good for various jobs, laser tools strut top nuts for them dam pesky top nuts when doing the front suspension, angle grinder for when that dam bolt just wont come out and you have totally run out of patience and swear words. power drill with a variety of wire wheels, for cleaning up the lastest scabby part you got from the breakers. circlip pliers internal and external versions for use on the drive shafts cv joints etc.

Yes Ian,20 Marlboro lights are an invaluble addition to all tool kits (emergency "break glass" packet hehehehe)

may be a luxury is multiple socket sets. I have a 1/4" set (for small beer), a 3/8" set (for pretty much everything), and 1/2" for wheel bolts, cyl head bolts, suspension parts, etc. Universal joints and wobble extensions on all of these. My small torque wrench is 3/8" and I have a large torque wrench which is 1/2". I tend to use a torque wrench for everything as I'm a little bit OCD

I've always used a large G-clamp instead of a dedicated caliper wind back tool
and I use a suitably sized allen key instead of a timing belt tensioner tool (levered over the socket on the tensioner bolt)
oh and for holding the water pump sprocket still whilst undoing the bolts I have a large one-handed adjustable spanner. Adjustable spanners are quite useful anyway, in true Goldilocks fashion I have three and used the middle one yesterday to undo a coolant sensor!!

Taps
Retaps
Stud extractor for the manifold bolts that just snapp!!

Some dies to clean up old bols if going to be reused.

Electricians Teflon cutting grease for threads.

 

Rubber Mallet is always good for delicate jobs where you don't want to wreck things.

I usually just use a forklift, sledgehammer, gas axe and bolt croppers though...
