That looks great Pete, and a nice alternative to a GTI. Love the basic radio, been a while since I've seen one of those, and the plates look brilliant. Keep up the good work
Hi Stu, yeah it much slower biggest think i miss is the power steering i think the quicker rack is much nicer and parking is a lot easier, i'll fit it when the turbo goes in i see you got your mk2 back beanie i'll forward you all the details of the plate supplier Cleaned the mats yesterday gave them a good scrub with some stardrops then some Einszett Plastic and Vinyl Cleaner, really like this stuff cleans really well and leaves a matt finish Really nice fit, have some custom carpet mats in my 16 valve and there always moving about, the back of these are covered in small teeth quite tricky to get in especially in the back but they feel really secure Thinking about getting a rubber for the accelerator pedal Wheel centres drying in the sun, took the wheel to a local paint supplier and he matched the silver for me
That is lovely great work in putting the final details on the old girl, my first GTI came from scotts of sloane square very exclusive!!!
Loving this tbh Sorry to go completely off topic but is that your MK2 in your sig mate? Looks lovely!!! Same colour as my brothers old MK2
thanks gents Yeah thats my 16 valve (Atlas grey) although its really old picture, 7 years at least, its on lowered suspension there which i replaced with stock in 2005 plus the spilts are in bits in my parents garage, i'm running GTI Engineering Aerotechs at the minute the car was from manchester originally so the plates arent really correct I always remember them having some tasty motors in the classifieds IIRC they were a big Oettinger dealer at one point which i always thought was cool
Looking good - the mats have come up very nicely I have the same ones in my 16v; they've lasted well for a plastic part that gets regularly stood on
Ah yes, got my old green Mk2 16v back - couldn't resist when I saw it up for sale again. Those mats have come up really well, I have a set of those too, had them years but never got round to putting them in the car for some reason as it always had carpet ones in instead. Might give them a try now I have a Mk2 again. Keep up the good work with the 1.3
are the mats held down with anything? Ive got them in my mk2 but the drivers one always ends up moving about untill its virtually sideways up against the centre console
these aren't attached to the floor, have only driven a few miles with them in TBH Radio trim arrived this morning been searching on ebay.de for a few weeks now with no success, stumbled on this on vortex only took a few days to get here really nice guy to deal with I always wondered what that small notch was above the din slot now i know Before After Really pleased with it, sits level with the heater surround and all the switches
couldnt stay standard for long Leather GTI steering wheel came today, its a PAS wheel was expecting it to be smaller than the standard two spoke thats on there currently but its the same size ordered some leather cleaner to go over it before i fit it Needed a leather gearknob to match the wheel, Got this one new from the dealers in 2002 and its been in the garage ever since, tempted to use this one as it allows me to keep the rubber accordion shift boot which i think looks really cool Next up is a combined gearknob and gaitor, sadly it doesn't have the VMS badge instead having a conventional shift pattern (fortunately this car is a 4E) needs a really good clean Going to try both and see which I prefer Been thinking about the turbo again worked out I'd like 4 gauges VDO boost/ oil temp / oil pressure in a New South Performance ashtray panel and a Stack AFR guage in a vent pod (been thinking about this to much I think ) When this came up on the classifieds thought i'd get it, be ideal if i turbo it but in the mean time an oil pressure gauge would be a useful addition, main issue is the wiring, dont really want to cut into the factory wiring so I'll have to look into that
Small update Got some new bungs for the front panel, mine has a few scrapes and scruffs on mine so am planning to take it off and repaint it in the next few weeks pedal rubber for the accelerator, another steering wheel the leather on the gti wheel was to worn[:^(] may look into getting a refinishing kit to spruce it up In the meantime picked up this Hella Momo wheel of ebay de, not bad for 25 the blue and grey should match the interior pete
Still have this, been buried in the back of my garage for nearly ten years, pic below of its first outing to get its MOT and rear suspension renewed (you can see it sagging in the pic here) May notice the MK4 peeking into shot, had a couple since the MK2 days 1.8 Turbo V6 4 Motion You'll notice they're both 5 door a necessity to ferry the 2x children around, the 1.8T is completely stock whereas I've been slowly modifying the v6, I've got a build thread on UKMKIV's which I'll try and copy over at some point. Back to the MK2, I purchased it with a view to swapping in a 1.8T but after owning both I'd much prefer a VR6, the 4 mo is my first VR and I wish I'd have driven one 20 years ago, its got such a great character must be fantastic in a well sorted MK2. Currently researching a 12v 2.9 swap biggest issue is lack of time (children again) but hopefully it will happen at some point. First job is finishing off painting the mirror caps in white I started all those years ago,
Not much to report, any free time I've had has been spent on my 4 motion, currently rebuilding the front callipers and stripping down 2x spare rear trailing arms, subframe and 4x arms for powdercoating and rebushing. I did recently sign up to the MK2 Facebook classifieds page so I seem to get a list of interesting parts served to me on an almost daily basis, without a doubt my favourite part of my GTI was the electric Recaro interior, I bought it from MJ in 2003 for £500 and its the part of that car I miss the most. When I got this car I did often think it would be cool to have the same Recaro (LS's) but re-trimmed in the factory fabric, looking now the OE Reacro's go for big money now so it was hard to justify buying a set only to have them re-trimmed, when these popped up on said FB group (2 different ads) I thought it would be a good little project to get started which wont take too much involvement / time from me. They are Reacro's from a MK4 Escort RS Turbo and MK2 Golf standard subframes, they were ideal for me as the fabric is goosed but the frames, foam and recliners seem really tight and solid. Ive found some excellent guides on this clubgti.com on how to marry the two together, I did wonder If Sirocco or Corrado bases would allow them to sit even lower (?) but these were only £20 so I can always swap at a later date if necessary. Not bothered on the lack of electric height adjustment (think I used it once on mine) but I am wondering if the lack of the lower plastic trim piece might make them look a little unfinished, have to wait and see on that one Was great trying them out again I'd forgotten how supportive they are, Ive got Recaro's in my 4 motion and they're not a patch on these I have managed to source a supplier for the correct houndstooth fabric (swatch below) but unfortunately they cant get the material on the bolsters, just need to work out if covering the whole seat in the houndstooth is possible and if it'll look ok Pic below of my interior there's some staining on the seat which happened during storage which I need to get out in the meantime (Fabric on bolster is the one I cant source) Started removing the 10 year old masking tape from my mirrors I'll need to get the residue off with lighter fluid but the bases should be good otherwise, you can see the paint issues i had last time (pin holes and bubbles) planning to flat them off and try again, I've since discovered 2k in aerosols you can get a really good durable finish so i'll be using them
yeah corrado/scirocco bases are lower but as you'll be chopping and welding anyway no need to try and source any couple pics of recaro subrames to give you an idea of what to do
Many thanks the pictures are really useful I originally saw this thread which has tons of information, the pics towards the end of the thread are what I'd like to achieve, https://www.clubgti.com/forums/index.php?threads/rs-turbo-recaros-into-a-mk2.285023/ Not sure what the best method is to take the seat pans off the frame, I don't have any access to air tools so wondering the best plan of attack
Not a huge amount to update, the little car time I've had has been spent in the evenings rebuilding my MK4 brakes (pic below) I'm planning on using the same calliper on the MK2 so its good practice I guess. On the interior front I've just sourced a leather wheel for retrimming in Alcantara and also found a place in Germany which list both seat fabrics I need, I've had no reply as yet hopefully its lockdown related and I've not offended them in someway by using google translate. Also got the 1st piece of the VR6 jigsaw, its a set of fans and shroud from a VR6 Corrado, I want to use as many bolt on factory parts as possible to make the conversion as easy as possible. Unfortunately I've now set myself the tricky task of sourcing the matching lower rad support. Upon strip down to refurb the plastic guide rings were in bad shape with broken tabs and cracks etc, unfortunately they are NLA, does anybody run these fans without them?
Just to update for any future searches, I posted the issue of the broken fan guide pieces on the VR6 Owners facebook page and a number of owners commented that they run the factory fan set up without the guides with no issues so I'm planning on doing this also. (on a related note social media is great for reach and ease of use but the archiving is terrible) Corrado VR6 airbox arrived earlier, would have been a lot cheaper to go for a cone filter (not sure when these got so expensive ) but my goal is to get the engine bay looking as factory as possible, cosmetically its not the best (have a plan to sort this) but importantly all the fixings are in great order
