Blaitently they are badging it as GTI cos all the old grey blokes that wanna feel young and women that don't know what they are talking about will buy it because to them it says "performance" when in actual fact its lacking. If you want a safe new version of the mk1 then the lupo Gti is the way to go, its just a shame that they did not pep the engines up in them a lil bit more, although that lil 1.6 16v engine has oodles of torque. Imagine it with a tuned 2.0 20v or a 18t, they would rocket. Edited by: Vento Mike
What a bunch of fools you are! Bleeting on about how it isnt a mk1 or some crap like that Its called progress and modernisation, get with it - its gonna happen, everyone is doing it, stop crying about it!!!! Bet exactly the same happened when the mk2 was released, give it a chance!
If you take into account inflation, 18.5k is good value for a new Golf GTI. My Mk1 Campaign cost 6,500 in 1983, and a Mk2 16v in Oak Green was 12.5k in 1992. In real terms that equates to about 22k for the mk1 and mk2 in todays money. Neither of these early GTIs had much in the way of equipment (the mk1 didn't even have a stereo as standard). Cheers, Drew.
Well the point I was making was that ALL cars are over priced, not just VW's. IMO VW have been losing the plot big time for a few years now and with this latest Golf it's just gotten worse. They could really have tried to do something a little different from the crowd (307, Civic, Focus etc), but they just made another Euro Bus. I guess if they try something radical and it fails then they will make big losses, and at the end of the day they are in it for the money. So I guess they designed the Golf with that in mind Personnally I can't c myself buying a mk4 or mk5 or any newer VW in that fact. I think the Jap's are making the nicest cars at the moment. Roll on Jan the 1st
No plum boy, what people are saying is that they are no longer nippy little nimble hot hatches, they are big heavy and cumbersome and lack a lot of character compared to the older predecsors [:^(]
Actually Plum Boy Andy is right here! A GTI for the 80's had a different market than what a new GTI for 2004 now has! Alan
maybe... or maybe its the same market (ie the same people, only 20 years older).... plus all the 'I drive a GTi wannabes'..... yeah, they are completely different cars...unless you go for the R32 then I believe SEAT is the way to go.. or just buy mk2 Golf/Corrado Edited by: HiAsAKite
To be fair, im a little pi55ed off with the way its all going Why cant they try something different. If I buy a new mk5 I dont want to be mistaken for something thats Japanese. They need originalilty, but in this day and age its a gamble to do something different. Golfs are getting heavier and heavier all the time, and to counter this they are putting in larger and larger, more powerful engines, just to keep it below the 9 second 0-60 time. I really hope this new mk5 GTI, the flagship of the Golf family, is going to be something special. If it cant even keep up with a Civic Type-R then what the hell is so special about owning a GTI anymore? I say bring back the mk2, the best looking Golf they ever made, with VR6 and 20vT engines as standard!!!
Yeah they do that, it flops and the whole company goes bust - good plan! Cant see there being a market for a modern MK2 in this day and age, it isnt what the car buying public want.
