Hi I have a number of problems with my MK2 16v 1.8L GTI and would appreciate any help. 1. I recently had a problem with starting. The local garage (VW specialist) replaced an earth strap. Seemed fine for a while. A few weeks later refused to start again. Made cluck cluck noise of solenoid. New starter & solenoid fitted 2 weeks ago, still sluggish to start when cold. Starts easy when warm. Other symptoms: Tape (radio) started playing slowely like losing power. Got slightly better after driving a bit. This however got worse over next week. Tape plays really slow. Could this be related to starting problem ? I have not noticed any other problems regarding low power, Headlights seem to be as bright as before etc. Please help if you can. 2. Reverse lights staying on after changing to neutral or other gear. New switch fitted on gearbox. Problem still occurs. Is there a relay on this circuit that could be sticking ? any other suggestions ?
1. Sounds like the battery/charging system needs looking at, either that or something is draining the battery overnight... Once started from cold do the lights get brighter if you rev the engine? If you have a multimeter check the voltage at the battery when cold and then when the car is running, check again after a long run. If you have a Halfords near by they can check the battery for you for free. 2. If you unplug the reverse lights at the gearbox do they still light up?
MY 16V DID THE SAME SLOW TAPE PLAYER THING! WAS QUITE SPOOKY, REPALCED MY ALTERNATOR AND BATTERY AND NOW IS FINE
