    Hi all -

    My gf's mk3 gti 8v (2E) has just died.

We thought the clutch was on the way out - so she was taking it to have the clutch replaced - when the thing just stopped.

Turns out that there is a hole in the bell/diff housing - and one of the diff planet gears was on the road.

Im asking you guys basically what has caused this - and what would you recommend is my best repair option. The car has about 125k on it - and is in otherwise excellent condition.

Any suggestions for places to try for a recon unit etc gratefully received.

    Cheers

Basically the box is dead [xx(]
Get a second hand one, get it rebuilt, put it in and forget about it.
As its the 8v you can always use the mk2 16v (code 2y) box as they have the same input shaft.
Whats happened is a common problem on 100k+ boxes as they've had a hammering from day 1. Loads of people on here have had the same experience, and it ain't nice [8(]
