I have an 'orrible rattling sound from the engine of my mk1 cab, (1.8
gti k-jet) when accelerating. It sounds like someones dropped a spanner
in there. Acceleration & performance is ok, its just a nasty
sounding noise. I know this has been covered before some time ago but
any advice would be great. cheers.

sounds like its pinking m8,best bet is to have a play with the ignition timing (move dizzy bit by bit) or have it set up properly by someone with a timing light.

around 6deg btdc is normally ok on decent fuel.

    Not 'arf.

Whenever you hear those things when they are loose you would think it
was the whole bonnet, not just a small alloy plate under it, lol.

pain in the ares to tighten too, the nuts are usualy solid [:x]

most likely rotten filler neck rust blocking the whole fuel system, has it gradually got worse over time? and does it get progressively worse with journey time?
