Good working STD ABF motor with good breathing will give 160-170BHP around 6500revs and up to 150lbft torque peaking around 5-5500revs.
Assuming a STD 3.68 final drive on 195 55 15 tryes and an average 60ft of 2.3secs you are looking at up to 6.5secs to 60mph.

hey mate thanks for the reply, i am actually very happy with that figure, i dont really want to modify the engine as it will be my daily driver so i would like to see good mpg, the only thing i would do is add a induction lit just for the roar you get from these engines. seeing as i am now selling the polo GT engine out of my mk1 i am looking to buy a mk3 16v donor car to do the swap, does anyone know if this swap would be pretty much straight forward as in fuel wise because i have heard that the mk3 16Vs have different type of fueling? oh and will the engine fit as these engine are slightly taller?

    thanks agen

Thats a pretty accurate guess i'd say when mine was 1.8 (160bhp) it was timed at 5.9 but that was completly stripped, it's all in the launch thou!!!

i ran a 14.91 quarter and a 5.8 on road tyres 194/45/15, stipped, standard 1.8 16v just a 4branch and system a few years ago. havent timed it since the carbs, head and cams were done. i found it a lot easier to launch then than now with the lairy cams. it either bogs or spins like ****

as ian said its all in the launch;)

Thanks for the replys guys, i was thinking about putting in the Mk2 16v engine as would be more insurance friendly and cheaper to buy but then i thought after ive done that conversion im gona want some thing faster so thought why not just go for the 2.0, has anyone done this conversion using the ABF without any problems as in the engine fitting in the mk1 engine bay?

any info would be great, thanks

You mean 13.91@ 102-104mph ideally if you did 60 in 5.8
    or was it 14.91 @ 94-96mph with a 0-60 in 6.8secs.
If your car was launched well and you did get to 60 in 5.8escs something must have happened after 60mph as the ET is too high.

Not necessary, when mine was timed by the golf mag, the 0-60 was 5.9, the 0-100 15.7 and the quarter was 14.7 but v.max was only 117mph.

I think it may be due to being lightweight helping the launch with less inertia but the relatively low power and crap aerodynamics slowing down the higher speed acceleration.

Hopefully be a bit quicker now as it's 2L, 20 more hp, 20 more ft/lb, and shorter geared with a diff!!

    yep
5.8 0-60 14.91@92mph in a super lightweight mk1 shell. its all in the launch 150bhp is perfect for a fwd car off the line but you do have to work on your technique to get it just right

while i know this has been done i wish ide never bothered. first problem i just couldnt seem to get the info to enable me to wire up the abf ecu, so aftermarket ecu required. second problem the inlet manifold was too high and not enough room to get the rubber inlet pipe to fit properly. i did think about scirroco 16v manifold and k jet but seemed retrograde step so dth throttle bodies required so then radiator in the way. due to personal circumstances still havent got it running andthink 9a lump would be better suited.

You had that much trouble? Really? Vick had a standard ABF in his mk1 and it cleared the bonnet nicely. He also had standard ABF management. Surely buying a workshop manual with wiring diagrams from ebay would sort the electrical side out too?

Oh, 0-60 in the 5's is possible as stated here. I got 0-60 in 5.8 and 1/4 of 14.3 with my old 1.8 with flowed head an 3.89 FD box. 0-60 wont drop much with a 2.0L but the 1/4 will as the extra torque on up-change will see you pull through the gears better.

    Gurds

Ah. Why I asked that, having tested over 150 vehicles, my old Mk2 with full interior and 160bhp ABF motor on CIS used to get to 60 in 6.71sec and does the 1/4mile in 14.77@95.6mph my 60ft was 2.5secs. Once in North Weild I took out the speaker shelf and spare tyre etc and got the car to post 60 in 6.24secs the 1/4mile was not being tested. Surely with less weight my car would have been even quicker to complete the 1320ft with slght increase in terminal speed.
On a well optimised 16v 1.8 (same car) that same test yeilded 6.9secs to 60 and 15.13@93.7mph with a 60 ft of 2.45.
On the present set up (230lbft 16vT) the car does 60 in 5.8secs and a 1/4mile in 14.2secs@105mph but 60ft is now 2.66.

All cars ran OEM 195/15/55 tryes

This is why I asked that question. I am not saying your car does not have phenominal acceleration. Just trying to compare with what I know about.

Thanks for the reply guys, so the ABF will fit in there fine without changing the manifold etc?

The figures sound really good and i would be very happy with that. im not looking to race the car on a strip to get decent quarter mile tomes, its just going to be my daily driver....

Does anyone know what hot hatches my car would keep up with or even beat? i may come across as a boy racer right about now but im not lol

    thnaks again

    16V

the KR 1.8 16V will rev better 0-60 than the ABF but the ABF will pull alot better to 06 - 100if you want a good 0 - 60 time use a cabrio gearbox with a 1.84 second gear.;)

so you would say the 1.8 16v engine will have a quicker 0-60 time in the mk1?
i really am considering just putting a 1800 in there seeing as there dont seem to be much difference in the two? correct me if im wrong....

no fit a 9A 2.0l bottom end that will rev like the 1.8 due to the shorter stroke than the ABF. ;)

my friend has the quickest NA 2.0L 16V in the country and that is a 9A and that has alot better 0-60 because of this.

9A stroke is 92.8mm as are most 2.0 VAG motors of 1984cc inc ABF units.
Rods are different at 144mm for 9A and KR vs 159mm for all tall blocks inc the ABF. Bore is the same as well at 82.5mm. Pistons/Pins are different
ABF with KR Kjet system revs to 7200revs. ABF with Digifant 3.0 or 3.2 revs to 6900revs unless reprogrammed.
9A/6A with KR inlet cam and CIS will rev just live a KR and make as much power as an ABF. Will be just ike a 1.8 KR swap.

Im just moving house at the mo and was diging around clearing out some cuboards and i stumbled on some old timming slips from the pod 2 years ago. an old retro cars day if i remember correctly. My 0-60ft time was 2.03 on toyo t1-s tyres 195/45/15 which were worn right down to the markers

Do you mean 1.94 second gear? I couldn't find any 020 transmission with a 1.84 second:
