My mates needs to change the gearbox in his 1990 MkII gti. He has an 020 gearbox from a Seat Cordoba, Am I correct in thinking this would be a direct replacement for his broken 020 currently in the car?

an 020 is an 020 mate.
    Mounts may need swapping over.

Thought so. The mount looks a little storter on the seat item, and some of the linkages look slightly different, so I'll advise him to use the original golf items. Every thing else looks the same, but is there likely to be a difference in gear ratios between the golf and the seat gearbox?

Internals should be identical. If it was different it wouldnt be an 020 box, be an 021 or something!

There are lots of different codes of the 020 trans type, the code should be checked to find out what ratios it has. They do vary between 020 code and 020 code. The code and how to read it can be found on the Oil Change page at www.BrokeVW.com

Then check out GVK's site for a gear ratio calculator :)
