I want to get the rivits changed for bolts when I have the box off. It will be going to a specialist rebuilder next week hopefully but do I need to purchase the kit from VW or is it something a transmission specialist should have and be able to do?

Use a VW kit. I've found they are better quality than some others I've seen, and are only around 40.

If the transmission specialist is familiar with golf's then he should be aware of the bolt kit and be able to source - discuss the option with the specialist. Had my 4th & 5th extended on my 020 box and had the bolt kit installed to be safe as its done a few miles and had a few engine tweaks.

The VW ones will usually have 12.9 on the top. The cheapy quality ones have TA embossed and don't look as good around the head.

When I explained to them it had stuck in 3rd, he knew exactly what had happened. I also mentioned the diff bolts and he knew these were a weak point so I think he may have the kit there to do it for cheaper.

Funny enough, I was on with a customer of mine today and it dawned on me he was in the unit next to these transmission guys. He said he sees cars arriving on flat-beds from as far as Cork and even Scotland to get work done with them, very well known apparently so hoping he can sort the bolts too.
