Ive tried the search, all 86 threads it returned :p

Im looking to replce my woefully long final drive with a 3.94 or a 4.25.

However, im unsure as to what final drives will fit.

Do i need to stick to the larger input shaft 'boxes or will any final drive from a vw 5spd fit?

    Thanks in advance

the 'final drive' is just the pinion shaft and the ring gear (hence why peopl call it an R&P)

nothing to do with which input shaft or gearset you use as the only teeth machined into the pinion are the ones that mate with the ring gear.

    I have a 3.94, I love it, it suits my VR6 perfectly.

If you're going to do mainly track driving go for the 4.2.

An AGC passat box has a 3.94 final drive, but be careful, the early ones(1990) has small hols in them for rivts (like the 020) and you can't use the quaife diff and bolt kit with them.

Speak to Vince at Stealth, h'es the man for box rebuilds and advice on stuff like this.

a brand new final drive is under 200 from VW.

    Thanks PhatVR6

1st modified 'box for me, so new to all the internal workings.

trying to put some life into my 16v, 3.94 equates to just under 4krpm in top @ 80mph

4.25 would be fast but a bit loud for long journeys methinks

    thanks again :)

put a 0.71 5th in it for crusing.

I've ot a 0.75 6th in mine, it's almost the same as the old 5th.
